Title says it all really and I'm guessing most people coming here already have the game but I swapped my CD for a download as was only a couple of pounds.

It includes the expansion and seems to work ok on Win 7.

GOG released an update to correct the problems that Zoid mentioned. Here's a quote from the GOG Alpha Centauri forum:

Hey guys,

We just uploaded a new version of the installer for Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri along with a patch to upgrade your existing installation.

If you don't want to download the whole installer, just grab the the Universal Update and your game will be the latest version.

A few small changes:

Alien probe teams now use the correct art.

The Cyborg faction now correctly has the Technology Steal ability.

The Drone faction now correctly includes the Base Revolt ability of 75%.

If you have any problems or questions, please let us know. Thanks :D

I waffle on getting this. I never really got into SMAC back in the day, but I didn't have the expansion. How much of a difference does SMAX make?

It doesn't really make a difference in gameplay, so if you didn't like SMAC your probably not going to like SMAX.

I'm not sure I disliked it per se, just found it difficult to learn the new terminology when I had good ole comfortable civ2 to play.

SMAC and SMAX were an iteration of the Civ2 game engine rather than a revolution. Civ3 and beyond had changes that really altered the game play significantly.

SMAC/X is still one of the premier sci-fi speculative games out there. I remember buying it with several important strikes against it (its advertising arrogantly claimed to be "the death of civilization", which I considered heresy at the time) but I very quickly fell in love with the game.

It's rare that a game's instruction manual makes for fascinating (and informed!) scientific reading.

In my opinion, well worth the release price back in 1999. And if you can buy it for cheap from GOG.com, for me it would be a no-brainer. For style, setting, contextual detail, and "fluff", no other strategy game even comes close. And even though it's over a dozen years out of date, SMAC/X still holds its own very respectably from a mechanical rules-based standpoint.

Gameplay holds up well and the different factions do feel very distinct (not looking at you CiV). My main complaint is the dull, brown/dark green of the graphics rather than any actual gameplay issues. It does make your brave new world very dark and well...dull
