Did they increase the name buffer for cities and Units? If So, I can then settle a city in the middle of the desert and call it "Fort Stinking Desert". The current character limit on city names won't allow me that number for that name...

Not sure, they might have done due to the personalised maps, there is an option to have your cities automatically named after a nearby landmark instead of the default option for your chosen civ, some of the landmarks have long-ish names.....but then I'm usually happy to leave my cities names as they are so not tested that limit....in fact I wasn't even aware there was one until your post E_T

Yeah, the limit was so that the bar under the city wouldn't get too long, atl east that's my assumption... Because it certainly isn't to save a few bytes here and there... especially when they have other memory issues and bloated code (originally, not the streamlining that's been done since...).

I was surprised when I read a thread that revealed that a cause of some CTDs was actually due to the "Show resources" option being turned on, apparantly the effort added to the game's processing requirements to add all of the little visual tags for resources is relatively high, so keeping it on all of the time does not necessarily cause a slow-down, but can cause a CTD....not sure how true that is.

We've not heard anything from Beta on how well the C2C mod is working on the Pitboss server....although considering the scope of the mod I'm hazarding a guess that it isn't.

Not certain, but as they seem to be about ready to release a new regular version (not the SVN or patch), from what AIAndy had posted after one of my inquiries, we might want to wait anyways.

Besides, if we should have the in game BUG options the same, we'll need to go over them before we start. I've seen posts that some of the MP players have exchanged their XML files, so that they know they are on the same page, but still good to go over them, especially when I'm still very unfamiliare with most of them...

Also, we all need to be sure that we have all of the logging turned, to keep track of any issues while we play. Especially on the pitboss server.

@ :beta: dude, any progress?

Will ever manage to finish a game before the next version is released?....although wit hthe max compatibility saves it often doesn't matter, but I like to make sure I experience any new additions, so with a new version, I start anew too.....and what did AIAndy post....and what was your inquiry?

BUG options.....yes....there's more room for error there than anywhere else!

I was posting something about some observed funky AI behaviors. And it was Koshling and not AIAndy, but still...

So, any Idea as to when the next version will be released? That or a .dll update (thus making it 22_2)?

Probably a couple of weeks time

Hmmm.....turn 1432 and the game has slowed down considerably, I shall persevere to see if it remains just slow or if it CTDs.....annoying that I usually cannot do anything bigger than a standard map with this mod....but then I am playing on a laptop!

I'm not sure how my experience would change with a PBEM game as presumably I'll be going in to take my turn and then coming out again so the slowness wouldn't be as noticable. Although I suspect that the first few turns will be pretty quiet, not much to do in the early parts of the pre-historic age!

Hi, good to see you guys playing c2c. I've been playing awhile now so might be able to give you some tips. You need to have enabled civ to be able to use more than 2gb of ram or else it will indeed crash late game. Once you get this sorted and have a decent machine and 64bit win7 i am running 50+civs on gigantic earth map modern era.

Its really made for snail speed i'd say and don't be shy to use the auto-explore auto-hunt options on your units especially early as this will get rid of alot of the 'grind' feeling in the prehistoric era etc.

Make sure you have build que's in your cities and you can number them like in normal civ4, (control+1,2,3 etc) If you have to choose what to build each time something finishes it becomes really annoying..

Oh and not sure if your aware but there are BUG options which is the little ladybug in the top left, you click on that and there are a myriad of further customizations that you can make.

I thought the 2GB limit was a windows XP thing, not a civ thing?

Auto explore and hunt, do that already!

Queing oh yes...sometimes I stack up a lot, sometimes just a bit....that's what the multiple production bit is for.

The BUG options are what are most likely to cause OOS errors in any game we play, some of those options only affect the interface, so affect the gameplay...either type of option couldcause an OOS if someone just changes even one of them.....mind you sometimes OOS occur even when you haven't changed anything.

EDIT: Checked CFC, looks like with W7 BTS automatically will make use of all the RAM I have

The "/3G" switch. I had seen some things about that, but the only real thing was someone saying to do a sarch, but I got too many things to look though on that. If you could post a link to the actual instructions, that would be greatly appreciated.

And as for Decent machine, I've got an older machine and XP Pro and limited memory. Unfortunately, my box uses RDRAM, which is no longer made, still expensive and has to be purchased in pairs. Would be more cost efective for me to get a whole new MB/Proc/Memory to put into my box....but being Unemployed doesn't help with the cashflow for all that...

Yep, but you don't want that when playing a PBEM or Pitboss game, unless you want to wait 17 years to go theouth the 7000+ turns for that speed... (based on one turn a day average turnaround).

Make sure you have build que's in your cities and you can number them like in normal civ4, (control+1,2,3 etc) If you have to choose what to build each time something finishes it becomes really annoying..

I typically have 5+ items in my queues, pushing in new things and rearranging often. And I like to tell my units were to go, helps prevent things like running into the wrong terrain and getting killed. or missing something that I should have looked at.

I do like the auto patrol and auto-escort, but there should be something similar to the auto patrol, like auto hunt, where you can tell it to walk a parameter zone outside the borders and get some wild animals. And I don't like to auto improve. I like to get my hands dirty, so to speak....

Yep.

So, are you possibly interested in getting in to the game that we are setting up?

Drat.....turn 1507 CTD.....looks like large map is beyond my laptop...I also know that one of the AIs was building LOTS of units, they're all behind me tech-wise and yet he nearly matched me in strength....therefore he's got more units than me, lots more.

It also hints that even on PBEM game my laptop may not survive a large map. :-(

try turning down the graphics in the option screen, to medium or low (the part just below the screen resolution option part) and turning off Animations and change to single unit graphics. Plus, from what I also read over at cfc, having your resource balloons on also used a huge amount of memory, so turn it off.

Also, some of the discussions that I've been reading lately is that they are starting to come against a wall that is in the .exe game engine itself. So for them to be able to do some of what they want to be able to do (like the multi-map thing) might not be possible. At least, not with the current game engine...

Done all that E_T....tisa bit of a shame because one of the options that uses more memory also makes sure that the units like like what they are meant to, and whilst it does help a little, it doesn't help enough.

I'm going to start a new game on a standard map on a lower difficulty, this will be purely to see how long the game will run....I don't think I've actually played even up to the modern age in a recent C2C game due to the regularity of new releases...

However it may mean that my laptop is unsuitable for our plans a for a PBEM game....although having more human players may reduce the number of gigantic AI controlld stacks....which is what i believe is causing my problems.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the biggest hog of memory is the AI itself, it loves stacks, due to this it will build immense numbers of units, the more units, the more effort on the hardware...so the more AIs and the more warlike they are, the more stacks...then of course you need to build your own stacks to compensate...

Darn it! my partner's laptop has finally given up (the cooling fan had been going nuts recently and the laptop itself getting pretty hot, so not surprising)....however this means I'm reduced to playing only FB games or other short-term browser games so we can fairly share my laptop between us...at least I have the Xbox to fall back on too, but it does mean no Civ or any other long-play type game until we can source a replacement :-(

Would replacing the fan help?

Guess just playing a turn a day is out...

Business partner?? Other?

Business partner? no.....sorry, life partner...I don't say wife because we're not actually married, but as good as with 4 kids!!!

Cash is a bit short so new laptop is unlikely, but might be able to wangle one out of work, she only uses the laptop for FB anyway.

So a turn a day is fine if we get this PBEM game going...trouble is the mod takes a good 5-10 mins to actually get into the game!!

If she need a less complex computer, try accuateit.com for referbished and out of box specials. I got my last two flatscreen monitors from them. Originally, I had ordered two of the same, but one had failed they're burn-in test, called me to let me know and credited me for the one, as it was the last two that they had. A week later. I got my 2nd from ther and might get a laptop fromthere at some time in the future.

But recommended

Version 23 should be released sometime this weekend (hopefully). It will have several CTD fixes, including, I believe, the issue you were having with your game.

Was thinking that it might have been something else.... But from what I know, if you co-habit for more than 7 years, your basically common law married (depending on the state). Nut then, you don't get the discounts like on car insurance, etc because your still technically single...

And I had a Domestic Partner of 8.5 years, before we had broken up. But then, Florida doesn't (still) recognize same sex marrages, either...

Looks like the next version is delayed a bit or this is the normal process as I haven't been watching them until now, so no base to compare...

Koshling posted something about the new upcoming version and my reply/question

V23 will be released in approximately one week - you may want to just experiment a little, and hold off starting a 'real' game until then.

will the old 22_1 saves work with the v23?

Release times tend to vary....and each release does hold the possiblity of holding a few new bugs....but also many new features!....I would say a new version comes out roughly once a month
