No apologies necessarily offered. Regular co-host Joe "joebreeves" Reeves and interim regular co-host Daniel "DanQ" Quick are joined by Firaxis Games Executive Producer Barry Caudill in the first of a two-part installment of RevCast (RC) on the release of Civilization: Revolution for the iPhone and iPod Touch; RC is a podcast focused on CivRev on its various platforms. This, the series' eleventh episode entitled "Geekiness in the Way of Nerdiness" (Part 1) is now netcasting with a runtime of 14m59s. The summary of topics is as follows:

you might have to reproduce the problem many, many times, so that the dev team can locate the issue and correct it.

You’ll also need at least, basic computer skills. Can you install and uninstall hardware? Can you install and update drivers? Do you know what DXDIAG is? Are you familiar with Microsoft Office?

Just curious, but I wonder how well software testers from other disciplines/ industries do in the gaming world? For instance in my environment DXDIAG has no bearing whatsoever, and because I am on a "cost plus" project, then the time factor is probably significantly different. Also, how far are testers advised to "chase that little white rabbit down a hole" in this industry? From what the article implies, it sounds like they try to set up bounding boxes around their QA playtesters (i.e. "here is your responsibility set -stay focused on this"), but if you see something outside your bounding box, do you just note it and drive on, or do you have the leeway to investigate/ diagnose (which of course takes time away from your core responsibility set)?

In December of this year PolyCast, a podcast entertaining and information Civilization strategy, will complete its third season. Before then, it is hoped that it would have at least been one of the Top 10 nominees again in both the "Best Produced" and "Gaming" categories for the 2009 Podcast Awards which is now accepting nominations until 23:59PM Hawaiian Standard Time on October 19th.

As noted in the rules of the awards process, 40% of each nominated podcast`s review grade comes from the number of nominations received during the 15-day nomination period. Therefore, to ensure PolyCast has the best opportunity to be one of the Top 10 nominees to then be voted upon during a 15-day period afterwords itself, as many legitimate nominations need to be submitted for the show now. When nominating, please follow the data below for both the "Best Produced" and "Gaming" categories:

Podcast Name: PolyCast

Podcast URL: http://thepolycast.net/polycast

On behalf of the PolyCast team, please do not nominate the show for anymore than the "Best Produced" and "Gaming" categories: the aim is to focus nominations in these categories and these categories alone. Do not submit PolyCast for more than these two categories as that would invalidate your nomination. Further, please use the "Comments" field to help the reviewing team understand why you feel PolyCast is deserving of being nominated in both the "Best Produced" and "Gaming" categories. Be certain to include your name and a valid email address to ensure the verification and in turn validity of your vote.

PolyCast is a bi-weekly audio production in an ongoing effort to give the Civ community an interactive voice on game strategy. Thanks in advance to all of those who decide to vote for PolyCast in the "Best Produced" and "Gaming" categories for the 2009 Podcast Awards. The nomination effort was successful last year, so here's to repeating that performance to set the stage for the next round!

That's an excellent question. I'll have to ask Scott!

In the meantime, we've added the latest in our ongoing series of jobs in the gaming industry. Barry Caudill talks about starting as a producer, and two of our newest producers share how their education helped get them a job as a producer.

Answer one question correctly, and you can be one step closer to owning a copy of Civilization: Revolution for the iPhone and iPod Touch; answer two questions correctly, and you can be one step closer still. Three copies of this release ($4.99US value each) are being given away by RevCast, the monthly Civ series podcast focused on its console platforms, and developer Firaxis Games.

To win, email thepolycast@gmail.com with your answers to the following questions:

2. In Episode 12, what does Dan suggest that causes Barry to say "It all ties together, doesn't it?"

The first three to answer both questions correctly will be the winners; those who first answer one question correctly will be next to win a copy if/where applicable. To ensure your eligibility, include your full name in your message; one entry per household. Restrictions as per Apple's Apps store apply. Contest runs from October 19-28, 2009 (11:59PM ET).
