The Civilization Quiz Game

3,871 posts in this topic

I'm a little bored, so I've decided to start a new quiz game in the tradition of some of the fun we've had in the past.

This one is based on the broad topic of "Civilization." The focus is on random aspects of human civilization (history, literature, etc.), and not so much on the game itself.

Rules:

Let's keep the rules simple and starightforward.

1. The first person who correctly answers any given question is the winner. They then get to ask the next question. If they so desire, they can transfer their turn to someone else of their choosing.

2. No more than 24 hours per question please, to help keep things moving. If no one gets your question right within the time period allotted, please give the answer and ask another question. (You get another turn.)

3. Play nice, it's just good clean fun here.

And here's the first question...

Who was the first known Mediterranean explorer to reach the shores of northwestern Europe, (ie. Gaul) and where was he from?

Hint: He is likely the progenitor of the first rumors of Atlantic sea monsters. His intent was probably to discourage potential explorers from competing nations.

He's the earliest mediterranean explorer I can think of... and I'm pretty sure he found some sea monsters.

Eh, no. ;) He went to Colchis, which is in the wrong direction. Nice try.

Darn. I have no clue who. Seems to me it was likely a

Phonecian.

Do you mean "reached the Mediterranean coast of Gaul" or "reached the Atlantic/North Sea coast of Gaul" ?

Ah, now you're getting warmer. :)

The Atlantic.

Ὀδυσεύς, from Ithaka?

Nice try. Unlike Odysseus, the individual in question most probably actually existed. ;)

Himilco the Navigator of Carthage is correct.

I wasn't expecting to have to come up with another question so soon though. ;) It'll be a few minutes.
