Dear Southern Cross,

Many thanks for your reply, your trust, and your suggestions. Before we discuss technology further, we need to clarify the situation with the Imperialist Swine. You now have contact with them, and you will see that we are at war. We have been since early in the game. Geography has not been kind to the Swine, unfortunately. They are in between the two of us, and we had no place to expand but through them. Once you explore our lands you will see that we were stuck on a peninsula just 8 tiles from the Swine capitol. Diplomatic relations with the Swine didn't progress very well, so we were more or less forced to take action. Currently we have an effective choke on their city, but need catapults to finish the siege and hence our push to construction. I think you can appreciate that having the Swine eliminated is in both our interests, given their location.

Regarding technology trading, we have completed masonry this turn and will be researching construction next. We appreciate you wanting to get writing sooner than later for libraries and to boost research. Our initial thinking on the religious techs was to get both our teams to feudalism and civil service and the military units that they enable. We are keeping a close eye on the Viking power graph. And quite frankly we suspect some sort of a deal between the Vikings and the Swine because our diplomatic dealings with the Vikings haven't been very fruitful, and we are watching the Viking power spiking. We need to get the job done on the Swine before the Vikings can possibly bring their forces to the fight.

That being said, there are numerous options that would still work for both our teams. We also see the merits in committing to an exclusive tech trading agreement to achieve a competitive advantage over our ‘neighbours’ and in being able to support each other in times of need.

Researching alphabet after construction would see us completing it on or around turn 115. If you can research writing and alphabet sooner than that, that may be the better option, and we will start another agreed-upon tech after construction.

We apologize that the Swine situation and our need for construction does not allow us to adopt your proposal regarding alphabet, but we hope you see the logic behind our thinking. And we are relieved that you have finally made contact with the Swine so we could better explain what is happening in our world, and you could better understand our big push to construction.

Regards to your team and we look forward to hearing from you. In the meantime, we will try to propose some other possible tech agreement that would be mutually beneficial to both our teams.

Greetings Illustrious Southern Cross

We are writing prior to receiving your response (we can only assume your translators are hard at work )for two reasons.

To start with, the Apocalypto Minister of the Interior and All Things Strange and Complex has advised that we will have alphabet around turn 111 or 112.

Secondly, we are proposing an "ice breaker" trade - something to get the ball rolling, so to speak. Mysticism and Iron Working for Mathematics.

Hope this helps with the thinking at your end and we look forward to your response.

Apocalyptians,

Apologies for the delay in replying, our main man is busy decoding elsewhere right now. We've had a group hug and like the angle you're coming from.

We'll be happy to trade Math for Iron and Mysticism, on the condition that we keep our trades between the two of us only, as has already been mentioned. We want to make things work with you guys, but they just won't if you go all sneaky on us. We need to agree on who is researching what and keep those techs reserved for each other. We don't mind the trading of 'unwanted' techs, but we don't want the thin end of the stick either.

Our detailed research shows you guys are honourable folk, so don't tarnish your reputation!!

Lastly, we'd be willing to discuss opening borders in a further hand towards a unified future between our two nations.......

Let us know how this grabs you.

Until then,

SC

To the esteemed members of Southern Cross,

Apocalypto agrees to open borders with your team, provided one condition. Neither of our teams will trade our map with any other human or AI player without the other team's approval. Yes, paper as a tech is a long ways away, so this condition won't come into effect until then. But keeping our city placement as a state secret is a big factor in any human vs human conflict, so we prefer to keep that secret intact against the Vikings. We will propose the open borders agreement in-game and you can accept it on your turn.

Regarding tech trading, there is a possibility we might be able to receive alphabet on our next turn from a trade. If so we will immediately send the agreed upon tech of mathematics for iron working and mysticism. We may also be able to milk the AIs out of some other techs such as archery and sailing and would be willing to share those with your team free of charge so that our teams are not doubling up on trading with the AI any techs that the Vikings can then use. We also agree to your stipulation about neither of our teams shall trade the techs that the other team has sent.

Further on this tech trading matter, Apocalypto would like to discuss with your team the possibility of an "all-in" agreement. We both know that the Swine are not long for this world, and that the Vikings are the lead dog in terms of human teams with their military build-up, along with their lack of interest in diplomacy. We would like to propose what could be called an "I kill you last" arrangement. In other words we work together on technological and military achievements with the plan to eliminate the Vikings. We send each other all technology and plan the eventual war against the Vikings together. This arrangement would last until the destruction of the Viking empire. From there we would go our separate ways and naturally attempt to be the final victor. We can discuss this arrangement further to hammer out the details, but we wanted to know your thoughts on the matter before we start drawing up the details.

Apocalyptians

We agree to your terms regarding Open Borders and not sharing maps with other teams be they human or AI with both of our teams agreeing.

Beginning Tech Trading soon is obviously in the interest of both of our teams, and as such we agree that we should start trading as soon as possible, along the lines previously agreed, starting with mathematics for iron working and mysticism. Additionally sharing any minor techs from AI's also makes sense, and is agreed upon.

In regards to the proposal to join together to destroy the Vikings, we do have some points to make. Firstly however, please let us state that we are not against this idea. More and ongoing discussions regarding timings of war would need to be agreed upon, always dependant on how matters ingame play out. There is no point going to war when one of our teams is not ready to do so, nor can play an equal role, and seek an equal share of the spoils. Additionally we would need to have agreed nonaggression time period built into any such agreement for after the Vikings cease to exist, for obvious reasons.

To the esteemed members of team Southern Cross,

We of team Apocalypto have experienced a windfall of trading and have picked up the alphabet technology, along with archery and sailing, before the original estimate of turn 111. Therefore, as soon as your team is finished with writing we will be able to send you the agreed upon mathematics for iron working and mysticism trade. Also, as per our agreement we will send the three technologies we received from trading so that you will not have to pick them up from the AI at the cost of giving the Vikings something that they may be able to trade for. We trust that this will satisfy any lingering doubts you may have about our intent to trade fairly and honorably with you. Once we have mysticism we are looking to forward our knowledge of the religious branch of the technology tree through AI trading and we will share that with you as well.

Next we would like to propose a new round of trading. In a previous email you suggested you were interested in metal casting, currency and calendar. We also are interested in those technologies, along with horseback riding, and suggest that we mutually pursue all four techs. It is our intention to research currency next. We would like to propose that you follow the course of metal casting and horseback riding, and we will follow the course of currency and calendar. The two sides are relatively close to even in terms of beaker costs (1206 for our side, 1124 for your side).

Regarding the possibility of mutual war with the Vikings we agree that more discussion is necessary, including an agreement on timing. What ideas does SC have in terms of timing?

Regards,

We thank you for the most generous trade and gifts.

This is truely a grand way to start a relationship, one which we will ensure is not one sided.

We agree with your proposal of Metalcasting and HBR for Currency and Calender as our next trade agreement.

In regards to the Vikings, that is in Hui now - we will respond as soon as we can. However as we both know, you have negotiations underway with the Swine now, and we wish to revisit our previous negotiations with a neighbour. Perhaps we both sort out these first as a suggestion?

And a quick reply and query back to them via gmail ...

Greetings. We are glad you are pleased with the initial round of trading and the proposed next trades. However, we are confused by your last paragraph and wonder if you could clarify or re-state it. We can also confirm that we have had no contact with the Swine since we declined their last attempt at negotiations. That was many turns ago. We are NOT in negotiations with them now.

And please let us know if we can clarify anything from our side. Thank you.

Greetings. Nugog has internet troubles. I'll be as clear as my English knowledge allows:

We are willing to go against Vikings. But first we must go against Portuguese AI (as you are against Swine).

BTW, I read you have a member from New Jersey, does he speak Portuguese?

Our Apocolyptonian Friends

Our most sincere thanks for the generous gift of Polytheism.

If our last message caused any confusion we apologise. The diplomat who penned it had been on the beers, and thought he was being clever. He has since been removed from his post.

What he was trying to infer is that any action against the Vikings would be best to wait until after you finish your war with Swine. ( negotiations = war apparently..... ) .

We have previously had a small war with Joao, and we really need to finish him off before we can focus on another target with all of our vigor, as we have a long border with Joao.

The Construction tech would greatly speed our timeframe against Joao and therefore against the Vikings. We realise we ask for perhaps too much, and as such we will not be offended if you decline our request.

Regards always

Re: Confirmation and Construction

Greetings Southern Cross

Many thanks for your clarification on the wording of your previous message. It was appreciated. We also sympathize with your team regarding Nugog's excessive consumption of beer. A few on this team also have that weakness. .... burp ...excuse me.

To confirm our approach to trading, techs that we pick up in trade from the AI, we are fine in forwarding them to you for free. This keeps the techs in the hands of the AI to a minimum - hopefully. However, we are keeping track of beakers invested in the techs that we are researching. We are not looking for an exact beaker match in trades - but rather some level of eventual parity.

We are more than willing to swap construction for currency in our current tech arrangement and can send it to you immediately. We would ask in return that you forward metal casting as soon as you have completed it. Sound OK?

We understand your wish to deal with the Portuguese situation prior to the Vikings.

Regards and cheers! Beta of Apocalypto

Most generous friends

Thank you for you kind gifts.

We would most certainly appreciate Construction now, in return for us gifting HBR and Metal Casting as we attain them.

We are currently researching HBR as it will help us achieve our goals vs the Portuguese faster.

We will give that to you as soon as we attain it, and then move straight onto Metal Casting, and again pass that on.

We hope this is agreeable.

And we have another request from the Kiwis:

Apocalypto

Again - thank you for the generosity and trust shown by sending us Construction.

We will of course honour our side of the deal, HBR as soon as we finish it, followed by MC.

We wish to ask for yet another favour. You have a warrior near our lands. We were wondering if that noble warrior could take walk through Joao's lands. Joao has recently aquired Iron, the source of which we cannot see. We believe it to be in the northern area of his lands. Knowing the location of this vital source of material would greatly help our planning for future activities.

Likewise, we have been approached by the Swine to Open Borders with them. To date we have politely declined, as there is no benefit for us. However we could grant their request and do reciprocal scouting for you.

Please let us know your thoughts.

Regards

Regarding contruction, you're welcome. Just a confirmation of the tech deal on the table. The previous deal was HBR and Metal Casting for Currency and Calendar. We swapped out Currency for Construction.

So the current deal is HBR and MC for Construction and Calendar. Sound good?

As to scouting Joao's lands, we are amenable with that. Our warrior will head that way shortly and we will share any intel he gains.

In return we are asking for a future consideration for ivory for a set period of time, once we have received horseback riding and set up a trade route with your team.

As for scouting the Swine lands, we have had their capitol surrounded for the past 77 turns, so we really don't need you to bother scouting. If you want to establish open borders with them that is fine by us, but in all probability it will be a moot point in 3-4 turns anyway.

Trust all is well in the land of Southern Cross.

Cheers! Beta of Apocalypto

To the esteemed members of Team Imperialist Swine,

As of this turn, we have taken Animal Farm for our own. We of Team Apocalypto would like to apologize that your gaming experience was not all it could be. As mentioned in previous correspondence we never held any ill will for your team. Our team knew almost from the beginning that we could not let our neighbor expand and block us off from our own expansion out of the peninsula on which we were both stuck. Unfortunately your team happened to be our neighbor.

Team Apocalypto would like to thank you for being a worthy and honorable opponent. We salute you for your fighting spirit and applaud you for hanging in there until the end.

We would also like to extend an invitation to Apocalypto for any of your members that would like to join our team.

Respectfully,

Team Apocalypto

Also - you had asked about intel on Portuguese resources. Portuguese copper is located 7 tiles west and 2 tiles north of Te Utu.

On the topic of the Portuguese, they have two ivory near Lisbon. Can we agree now to a trade deal for one of those ivory resources, when they are in your possession, in exchange for one of our luxury resources?

Greetings friends!

We have no problems with the proposed amendment to the trade deal. Also, looking to the next round of trades, we are currently working on feudalism. Machinery is an equal tech, and one which would be of value to both of us. Would that be acceptable to you?

We trust your war against the Portuguese goes well. It would appear so by the game messages we receive.

I would like to confirm our current tech agreement. We will trade Feudalism for Machinery. Per the in game chat with Fed a couple of turns ago, he said that you would have Machinery about turn 151. We finished Feudalism, so are looking forward to the trade. Is turn 151 still on schedule for completing Machinery? If not, can you let us know when you expect to be able to trade it, as we are trying to make our upcoming research plans.
