The Thread of Names

107 posts in this topic

Per Harovan's post in the turnplayer thread, let the naming begin. Not having seen Apocalypto I'll bow to other's wishes for naming the capital city. You must get it in soon though. :)

Well, Apocalypto was based on the Mayan civ, but the Mayans have been described as the Greeks of the New World. The civ was more an amalgamation of city states. They often competed against each other, and different cities could have been considered the capitol depending on the era.

So, we could pick one, or, we could create an entire new Apocalypto culture of our own. :)

Let's call it Steve.

Or Fred.

(you probably don't want me involved with naming...)

We could call it Apolyton.

Ummm, on a second thought, scratch that.

Perhaps we should just name it Apocalypto and the other cities and places after nearby landmarks and/or resources.

I like that idea. :b:

And the names will be ominous sounding - "Dark Mountain" and the like. The 'fear' thing that Uno likes. :)

Apocalypto sounds fine to me.

With our loose mis-mash, there's plenty of room for different kinds of theme names if we want them. Apocylapse Now, the movie Apocalypto (never seen it myself), myths & revelations and/or names for ends of the world, famous rabbits, etc.

Some of those can easily be made into unit names. We'll just have to cull out the ones that sound the best for cities.

Mictlan, Xibalba, and Metnal are probably the most pertinent to "apocalypto" as they are the Aztec and Mayan versions.

Shipap also has plenty in common. (pueblo indians)

Uca Paca and Henan Paca were the Incan variety....

which Steve is actually a representative denisen of Uca Paca.

(or will be once I'm totally done)

Rename worker to [from naming thread]

We have a worker? That bribe really did pay off. ;)

Good point though, what should we call the scout?

Ekahau

In Maya mythology, Ekahau is the god of travellers and merchants.

We have a warrior coming up soon. Checking my resources - we have a few choices.

CIHUACOATL

In Aztec mythology, Cihuacoatl was a goddess whose roaring signalled war.

I don't think this is a good choice. :D All they would have to do is google it. So how about ....

YACATECUHTLI (Yaca) for short.

In Aztec mythology, Yacatecuhtli was the god of merchant adventurers.

Sounds pretty harmless. We are simply looking for a trading partner. :)

Yaca it is. No need to signal our intent like that, even it is fairly obscure. :)

Truth to be told, Apocalypto or not, I'd prefer names I can actually keep in mind and reproduce (for turn report reasons) without actually logging in or looking into the thread of names. So I'd prefer Joe over Quetzalcoatl or similar anytime. :o

Steve's a nice name.

I'm Ok with Steve.

Yaca is pretty easy too. He talks a lot.

Cizin. God of death and earthquakes.

Good name!

But maybe after we declare war. ;)

New warrior coming up. How about: Ahau

AHAU CHAMAHEZ

In Maya mythology, Ahau Chamahez was one of two gods of medicine.

Other choices: Chantico

CHANTICO

In Aztec mythology, Chantico was the goddess of hearth fires and volcanoes.

And: Bacab

BACABS

In Maya mythology, the bacabs are the canopic gods. They stand at the four corners of the world supporting the heavens on upraised arms. Each of the Bacabs presided over one of the four years of the four year cycle.

And: Metztli

METZTLI

In Aztec mythology, Metztli was the moon god.

(I like the latter as Metz, in Alsace-Lorraine, France, is where I was born. My Dad, a radar tech, was posted overseas during the cold war era.)
