Thank you for getting a game started :).

 

I have very little experience with PBEM, so I'm willing to try whatever settings, but those I personally am most comfortable with are abundant native life, pod scattering on, directed research, random events off, do or die, flexible starting locations, map outline visible, normal research rate and techsteal on.

 

On the other hand, I fully anticipate being eliminated within 50-70 turns in any case, so I suppose the settings don't matter too terribly much to me :).

It's been so long since I last played a MP game of SMAC that I'm happy with anything - I need to get back into the game and go up against a human.

I might be interested in playing a game if no one objects. I have never played a Multiplayer game of SMAC(X) before so I hope I do not get pwnd to hard if I do.

 

Gians and Hive are both taken already and this isn't a pirate friendly map so I would definitely be at a disadvantage already not having any of my fav factions. So I guess I would probably go with Aki-zeta if I am allowed in.

I think I created it with the average native life setting, though I doubt vyeh would have any problems changing that setting to abundant if everyone wanted it.

Check back on the poly thread when you get a chance ( http://apolyton.net/forums/showpost.php?p=5582687&postcount=43 ), I did one last update to the map with some of the things you suggested. The file you put here is 14.9kb the last one I did was 15.9 that's the only reason I noticed it.

Rules:

  1. A player may not restart a turn without good reason. The player should specify the reason in the game thread if he was not able to avoid reloading the turn. (Obviously, if a player has suffered some sort of crash during a turn, such a reload is unavoidable)
  2. A player is not permitted to establish contact with another faction prior to having met them in-game.
  3. It is not allowed to mind control with standard probe teams units or bases of any faction that runs a +3 or higher SE Probe rating.
  4. If a player performs a probe team action other than to infiltrate against another player with whom (s)he is in a truce, treaty or pact, they must inform the probed player what it was they did and what they stole/sabotaged. They must also choose the 'declare vendetta/cancel pact' option when they perform the action.
  5. A player is not permitted to make more than one social engineering change per line, per turn. For instance, one is not permitted to start the turn in wealth, switch to power mid-turn for the extra disbanded minerals, and then switch back to wealth that same turn, getting the refund.
  6. A player is not permitted to use the 'demand withdrawal' feature against another player, leaving the AI the decision of whether to withdraw or not.
  7. A player may not accept a bribe from another player's AI during council sessions.
  8. A player may not use the F4 screen when infiltrated to change an opponent's workers to specialists.
  9. Council notification - immediate broadcast to all players(Post in the thread and e-mail to all immediately by player who has called elections, citing candidates and votes. After each player's turn, post in the thread the running totals).
  10. If a player declares vendetta upon another player, either directly or indirectly, they must not accept a pending diplomatic agreement between the two factions in the same turn.
  11. A player may not make air drops using the right click "air drop to" function, when it is not possible to do so with the "i" button, ie. after already having moved or made a drop.
  12. A player may not use build queue manipulation or other loopholes to hurry production at a cost that would be lower than directly hurrying the item that one intends to build.
  13. A player may not use build queue manipulation or other loopholes to build something you could not directly add to the build queue.
  14. A player may not upgrade a particular type of unit using the design workshop, and then attack with that unit in the same turn.
  15. Secret projects may be hurried with crawlers.
  16. Planetbusters may not be used when the charter is in effect.
  17. Players and AIs start with 2 CP's, 2 scouts and 1 formers.

Notes:

  1. St Jon will have to convert the save provided by the CMN.
  2. Unity former droids, designed by Mart, are new basic units that cannot be reversed engineered. You will need to research Centauri Ecology to build more formers.
  3. Format and rules are all copied from Mart.
  4. Darsnan and Mart will receive a copy of your passwords (for safety).

 

Notes:

(3) Could everybody please tell me where they are and what time of day they play so we can get a turn order.

I posted on the profile page like you asked, not sure what exactly you are expecting me to say now so I will just follow suit with the posts before me.

 

Game Name: Don't really care what it is called

 

Time Zone: US central (GMT -6)

 

Map: I made it so I better think it's OK :nod:

 

AI: I don't have a preference (curious why no one wants aliens though)

 

Game Settings: I wish blind research was on along with random events(I expect to be over ruled on this though :( and I will probably get over it). Other than that no problems.

 

Rules: Only one I really don't like is the planet buster rule #16 If I am getting pwnd and have a planet buster I don't see why I can't use it to try saving myself, regardless of the status of the UN charter. (Can someone explain the purpose of this rule in case there is something I am missing. Wouldn't the diplomatic penalty of having everyone declare vedetta on you be enough?)

JustinSane asked for directed research and random events. You don't want directed research and random events. Could the other players weigh in?

 

Rule #16 was a rule that the players in the previous game I built want. If there are no objections, I'll remove it.

 

BTW, only AI players have to declare vendetta. Human players do not have to.

I did not know that only AI's were forced to declare war. Can I instead propose the removal of rule 16, and that we add a rule that human players must declare vendetta on anyone using a Planet buster for a minimum of say maybe 10 turns?

I'm in US eastern time zone and generally play between 7:30-10 PM, but that varies a bit.

 

Removing or modifying rule 16 is fine with me. As to the settings, what about a compromise of directed research and random events enabled?

 

Map looks good (thanks Russia4Life!), but looks to have very little fungus on it, so the Planet Cult may not be too viable. Would anyone mind if I started as the Drones instead? I'd also be fine with the Cult if I started with an extra independent spore launcher (I rely pretty heavily on worm police early game, and I'm not sure there's enough native life to get garrisons for the first few cities like in abundant or average native life maps). I apologize if that last idea was a breach of PBEM etiquette - I'm new to this and don't know if such things are done :).

 

Would prefer no Aliens, but beyond that no preference for the AI factions.

I guess I could compromise with you, Blind research isn't that big a deal to me I am just so used to playing with it on, but I think random events are very fun and interesting(even the bad ones). So, I guess you can remove my request for blind research vyeh.

 

As for the spore launcher ideathat is fine with me, or maybe instead of starting with 2 scout patrols, you could instead start with 1 scout patrol and 1 mindworm or 1 scout patrol and 1 spore launcher if you go with cult? I wouldn't mind any of these ways.

 

I guess all that's left is waiting for other peoples opinions on these topics?

Thank you for the compromise :).

 

I'm fine either with the Drones or with the Cult starting with an extra spore launcher, but having the spore launcher just replace one of the other starting units I think would leave me a bit too far behind where I'd be with the Drones on this type of map (not much native life, and island starts so no means of pressuring other factions before doctrine: flexibility).

 

The Planet Cult are my favorite faction and the one I've used the most in single player, but objectively they aren't all that good except on specific types of maps and with specific settings. I'm new to PBEM and rusty with SMAC in general, so starting out with (arguably) the weakest builder faction on a builder map without a bit more of a handicap than switching a scout for a spore launcher would probably cause me to lose even more quickly than would otherwise be necessary :).

 

If any player would prefer not to get into handicapping one of the starting positions, maybe it'd be easier for me to just go as the Drones? I don't want this to sidetrack getting the game going.

Spore launchers and PB's OK with me but I don't like Random Events. I go with the flow though.

Got one quick question, Can you tell me the specs for this unity former droid(I am guessing it is a former type unit) or point me to somewhere where I can see what it is? I suppose I could always wait for the game to start and have it be a surprise.
