  2. It's been a while since I got stuck into a game. I've a trio of Civ 6 PBEM games going with a friend from work, but I thought it was time to write a new AAR and CK2 has been pulling at me for the last couple of months. I also thought, with Imperator:Rome on the horizon, it would be beneficial to get back into a Paradox game and CK2 is my favourite of the trio that I have. I realised that I have always played CK2 as an independent realm, so thought it was high time I tried a game as a vassal. I naturally gravitated towards England, and after a bit of a browse I decided that Waltheof, Earl of Northampton, would be my chosen start. To celebrate the occasion, I dipped into the coffers and purchased a trio of DLC - Way of Life, Conclave and The Reaper's Due, to add some roleplaying spice to the game.   3. By the autumn of 1076 the whole of Scotland was rid of the pox and it had started to clear from the emerald isle too. I continued to plan for the future and for a time when life returned to normal. My Chancellor was advancing in years, so I set about finding an able replacement, deciding to bring a young Germanic man into my court and groom him for his future role. Around midwinter my daughter, Hungifu, was beset with oozing lesions and a high fever. She was immediately quarantined and tended for by my healer Margaret. My interests in external affairs dwindled as all my thoughts went to my eldest daughter and her sufferings. From a count of those infected in my demesne, it seemed that one in three adults were dying from the fever, over twice that for the young, frail and elderly! If I was to lose my daughter I would be stricken with grief! Midway through 1077, news reached me that a revolt had erupted in Scotland. News soon followed of an outbreak of fever that started at the siege of Fife, the sickness soon spreading to neighbouring counties. Were we in for a second wave of fever, even while the first still had its deathly grip on most of the country? Meanwhile my elderly Chancellor passed away, of natural causes thankfully, and my recently acquired replacement effortlessly filled his position. Not long after it seemed that the pox had left Northampton and by the autumn it had cleared from the whole of England! Over the summer my daughter’s condition had been slowly improving and it was with great relief that I was informed by my healer that she had made a complete recovery!
  4. Loyalty - DD#19 Unrest So, let’s recap what we mentioned talked briefly about unrest in the 16th development diary, and how unrest in cities affected the loyalty of provinces. Unrest also have two other direct impacts, the first is the reduction of commerce, tax, manpower and research from the city, while when it reaches the threshold of 10 unrest, you can no longer recruit regiments in the city, build buildings, or interact with the population. Unrest is generated through unhappy pops, low stability in your country, war-exhaustion, governors policies and corruption. It can also be reduced by various laws, positive stability and by assigning armies to the local governor. The happiness of a pop depends on its culture and its religion compared to the country’s religion and culture. Different pop-types also want different civilization levels to be happy, while a tribesman want it as low as possible, the citizens want it rather high. Different laws makes different types of pops more or less happy as well. Access to different goods in the city will also make pops happier. If a pop has less than 50% happiness, they will contribute to the unrest of the province. Now let’s talk about loyalty. There is three types of loyalty we’ll talk about today, as the loyalty of subjects is a subject for another diary. (And I just wanted to type that sentence..) Province Loyalty Each province have a loyalty value to the country. If it goes down to 0, then that province is basically 100% autonomous and provide nothing to you. They will cancel all trade to other parts of your country and every city will be acting as it had at least 10 unrest. If enough provinces are disloyal, they will either start an independence war, if the dominant culture is not your primary culture-group, or a civil war, if they are of your culture-group. There are alerts if your provinces are disloyal, or if you risk a civil war or major revolt. Cohorts Loyalty Each cohort in an army can become loyal to a single person. This depends on the charisma of the commander during a battle or a siege. When a cohort is loyal to a character the country pays less maintenance for it, as the commander of the unit it is loyal to, starts paying the unit him or herself. There is a slight drawback or two to having cohorts loyal to a character instead of the country, like for example, a cohort that is personally loyal to a character will not allow it to be transferred away from the unit in any way. Also, a character with cohorts loyal to him tend to become more disloyal over time. Character Loyalty Characters loyalty to the Country is one of the more interesting aspects to manage, as disloyal characters is a huge risk, as disloyal characters will refuse to abandon their armies or provinces, and if enough are disloyal they will form a block together to form a civil war. Some forms of government, a few inventions and some ideas increase loyalty of all characters. Giving people titles and offices will increase their loyalty, but removing them decrease their loyalty. Characters of the same faction as the ruler tends to become more loyal over time, while friends and rivals of the ruler will see their loyalty go up and down as well. When the loyalty of a character is below 33%, that character is considered disloyal. Civil Wars! While a major revolt is not different from having a large nation revolt from you in other games, civil wars are dramatically different. The threat of a Civil Wars will start as soon as either 33% of the army is controlled by a character that is disloyal OR 33% of all provinces are disloyal to the country. During the threat of a civil war, a small timer ticks up each month, where the civil war will break out after a year. During this time you have an alert so you can see that you have a risk of it. Of course, there are alerts as soon as a single province is disloyal or a general is. When the Civil War starts, all disloyal characters and provinces will join them. And possible friends and families as well. A civil war is a war-to-the-death, where provinces automatically switch owners when you occupy them, and if you lose the civil war, it is basically game over. And always remember.. Tyranny is not a help when it comes to get loyalty. Sic Semper Tyrannis!
  5. A fever gripped me and my condition worsened. My dear wife tended to my every need, but with each passing day I became more and more ill. Despite her best efforts, it soon became obvious that treatment was beyond her skill and a physician would have to be called. With no suitable candidates within the castle walls, someone would have to break the curfew and venture forth into the plague stricken surroundings. Hereberht volunteered for the mission, explaining he felt guilty for failing to secure the castle from intrusion. Being bed ridden I was reluctant to let him leave, as he was administrating while I was incapacitated, but he was adamant that he wanted to amend for his oversight. I needn’t have fretted, because he was only gone for a couple of days, before returning with an old crone, who had a good reputation for her skill at healing. Herebehrt also brought back news that the pox had engulfed the whole of England, and jumped the water to French soil too! After tending to me for a week, Margaret was adamant that I did not have the pox, just a particularly bad fever, and that I would make a full recovery in time, if I followed her instructions and rested fully. I took her advice, and soon enough I was on the road to recovery. By midwinter I was fully recovered, while outside the pox still had its grip on the rest of the country. Three months later, news reached us that the pox was starting to die down in Scotland and was slowly clearing from the north. I started to make plans for renewing activities, once the pox cleared from the counties surrounding Northampton, but Adhemar advised I should be happy with my lot, and concentrate on securing and improving my own lands and helping to improve the welfare of my peasants instead. I sought further council with my wife, as I could see where he was coming from, but she shared my opinion, that we had to try to capitalise on the devastation wreaked by the pox and take the initiative politically. It would seem that others, in the higher echelons of power, recognized my potential too, as we were visited by an envoy of King Gyrth, with news that I was to be made a commander of one of the King’s Armies. I can only hope it was in true recognition of my potential, and not a convenient way of putting me in the firing line......

Military Traditions pt.2 - DD#18 To recap from the DD#15, there are seven different military traditions in the world, tied to which culture-group you have, and due to the size of the traditions and how they are structured you will see rather different and unique nations. Military Traditions unlocks unique abilities, unlocks new units and give special bonuses to units. Each Military Tradition has one bonus they get from the start, and then three different paths they can go down through, where after you have picked the seventh tradition in that path, you’ll get the a special benefit for that as well. It is not very likely you will get to the end of all paths by the end of the game, so you really have to think about which path you want to progress down through first. One military tradition currently costs 800 military power, and each tradition taken increases the cost by 50%, and each military technology level reduces it by 25%. Italic Traditions This time it is the Italic traditions, which is available to all countries in the Latin culture-group. They all start with the “Walled City” tradition, which gives +25% to Defensiveness, which basically makes sieges against your fortified cities take 25% longer The first path of the Italic Traditions is the Tribal Path. Artisanal Bronzework: +15% Light Infantry Defence The Equestrian Order: +15% Light Cavalry Offensive Deus Vult: +15% Omen Power The Acquisition of Wealth: Enables ‘Raid City’ The Aulos: +15% Light Infantry Morale Mare Nostrum: -25% Trireme Maintenance Cost Rousing Oratory: +15% Manpower End bonus for this path is ‘Hill Dwellers’, which gives to +15% Combat Ability to Light Infantry when fighting in Hill Terrain. The second path of the Italic Traditions is the Support Path. State Navy: +15% Trireme Morale The Fabri: 25% Cheaper Military Buildings Scale the Walls: +15% Siege Ability Castra: Emables ‘Border Forts’ Logistics of State: 25% Cheaper Light Infantry, Heavy Infantry, Archers Scutum: +15% Heavy Infantry Defence Foederati: +15% Light Cavalry Discipline End bonus for this path is ‘Rome, Ascendant’, which makes Holding a Triumph 50% cheaper. The third path of the Italic Traditions is the Roman Path. Principes: +15% Heavy Infantry Discipline March of the Eagles: +5% Morale Recovery Triarii: +15% Heavy Infantry Offence Roman Roads: Allows ‘Military Roadbuilding’ Professional Soldiers: -0.05 Monthly Warexhaustion Velites: +15% Light Infantry Offence The Honor of Service +15% Manpower Recovery End bonus for this path is ‘Triplex Acies’, which allows a defensive stance for your armies, similar to the Greek Phalanx. There are a few abilities mentioned above that needs some more information. Raid City - This is possible to do when you have taken control over hostile territory, giving you money and manpower, while hurting that province in growth, output and commerce for 5 years. Border Forts - This creates a colony in an unowned ‘city’ that is adjacent to one of your own cities, adding 1 freeman pop of your culture and a fort for military power. Military Roadbuilding - The cheapest and fastest way to build roads in the game.
  8. Long day after long day passed slowly by. With the castle gates shut there was little to do, other than to make sure morale remained high within my court. News from afar was fleeting, and what did manage to filter through was grim indeed. Times were hard within the relative safety and security of the fortress, God only knows how the common folk were fairing, but it was sure to be unpleasant. To keep my court busy, I ordered a full inventory of the castle, so we could be sure how long we could hold out for before having to lift our self imposed seclusion. I ordered Domnal to conduct a full review of the defences, while Bishop Cerdic recorded the inventory and Adhemar questioned all the inhabitants, to collate all the information we could about what was going on, both at home and abroad. Steward Hereberht was tasked with sweeping the castle from top to bottom, to make sure that everything was in order and no stone was left unturned. While scouring the royal tunnels under the castle, Hereberht discovered signs of recent clandestine use. Tools and torches were discovered, but when questioned, no-one in the castle knew of there existence. Domnall was ordered to place guards through the tunnels, in a bid to discover who had been operating in them without my leave. If someone was accessing the castle without our knowledge it could have disastrous consequences. It didn’t take long to discover the culprit. A half starved old peasant lady was apprehended and brought to my attention. Upon questioning, and after much crazed babbling, it appeared she was the lover of one of my court, but she wouldn’t divulge who, for fear of causing embarrassment for all concerned. Her story seemed a tall one, and even if it wasn’t, I couldn’t risk contamination inside the castle walls, so decided to evict her immediately. Thinking the matter solved, we returned to administrative business, but the following night we were roused from our beds by a clamour from the great hall. Rushing to the scene we were confronted by a horde of angry peasants, led by the mad old crone! They screamed her name and rushed to confront us with pitch forks raised aloft. Flanked by Domnall and my best men, we charged into the rabble, hacking them down, one by one. Their desperate revolt had no chance of succeeding and it was all over in a quick, bloody mess. Over the following week I reflected on what had taken place. As much as I felt bad for slaughtering the desperate peasants, I could not expose my family and court to the risk of the pox. I knew I had made a harsh, but correct decision, but as the days passed, I couldn’t help but slip into a bit of a malaise. My spirits descended and my energy slipped away, as I dwelt more and more on my deeds. I had been raised a man of the cloth, but had become a man of the sword. Were the lives of my family and court more important than the lives of my people? Was this Godly behaviour. In a fit of self loathing I coughed and was horrified to find blood speckled on my sleeve.....

  10. As my dynasty was slowly getting in order, it appeared that my council was heading in the opposite direction. Adhemar, my Spymaster, approached me and complained that Domnall, my Marshall, had attempted to have him killed, for threatening to expose an assassination plot Domnall had launched against the eldest son of his brother, Earl of Tir Chonaill, in his homeland. Family affairs in foreign lands were out of my control, so I kept the information to myself, but decided to keep an eye on both Adhemar and Domnall in future. I also tasked my Chancellor to keep an eye out for potential candidates suitable to fill their positions, should my hand be forced into making a council reshuffle. Indeed, Marshall Domnall soon sound himself in deeper water, this time extorting local peasants out of their meagre savings. The peasants were understandably upset and demanded justice, but I was unwilling to publicly punish Domnall, instead deciding to keep an even closer eye on him from then on. No suitable candidates to fill his position were available, so I’d have to indulge his quirks for the time being. Not wanting a riot on my hands, I cancelled my focus on raising troops and tasked Domnall with suppressing any potential revolts instead. I also thought it prudent to start work on improving Northampton’s wooden palisade to low stone walls. Whether the threat would be internal or external remained to be seen, but I was sure that they’d be a good investment none the less. With these minor crisis’s over, it was time to spend some more quality time with my fruitful wife. My first-born, Siward, was showing signs of retarded learning, even though I gave him as much attention as possible, and I desired a more promising son as a potential heir, so we spent many a night trying for another child. It wasn’t long before she became pregnant again, gifting me a healthy young son, Harold, on the 8th October 1074! Mid way through my wife’s pregnancy, news arrived from the far north of a fast spreading fever running wild in the Scottish highlands. By December it had reached northern England and the Emerald Isle. A month later it had spread south to the Midlands and by February outbreaks were reported in the counties immediately to the north of Northampton! I ordered the gates to my castle closed, much to the anger of the peasants left outside, but I had to protect my family and court. By midsummer the fever had spread through my county, ravaging the countryside, while we remained isolated in our castle. My castle walls were hastily finished, but would they be enough to keep the epidemic at bay?
  11. Yeah, I think I'm the opposite to you. I much prefer paying CK2 and EU4 when I'm small and the little gains mean so much more. I prefer to know all about every one of my vassals and the relations between all of them. Once I grow too big it all becomes too complex a web and they lose their personal appeal. It's just another bit of a land gained with more meaningless vassals added. That's why I chose this start, I think it's going to be tough to expand and I don't have huge ambitions for growth at the moment. I'd be happy to win back the lands my father had, and then get a little on top of that, so that I've furthered my dynasty, but I don't have plans to be King of England, at least not at this stage....... I'm hoping the DLC that I purchased will provide enough flesh to the experience that I won't feel the need to continually expand to provide an interesting and engaging experience. I've faith that Paradox have continued to add depth to the roleplaying elements.
  12. King Gyrth’s war against King Malcolm III of Scotland was a fairly predictable affair and it wasn’t long before a peace deal was settled and Cumberland was returned to its rightful owner. The war did have its ramifications though; as soon as the peace deal was agreed, Gyrth’s dukes called for a meeting and demanded that they be given more powers on the royal council. Faced with a dilemma, King Gyrth decided to indulge his loyal subjects and grant them more powers. While others had been fighting wars, my wife and I had been seeing to local affairs and spending more time together. She once again became pregnant; if only she can provide me with a second son, I will be able to fully concentrate on more ambitious plans. Nine months later she provided me with a young daughter, whom I named Hungifu. Not the son I wanted, but at least I’d have a young lady to marry off to a potentially powerful ally. To celebrate my growing dynasty, and to attempt to attract favour from my influential neighbours, I decided to hold a midwinter feast. The centrepiece would be a huge roast boar, such that would get tongues wagging far and wide. I thought about sending my Marshall out to hunt the beast, but thought it would be best if everyone knew that I had killed the trophy. Alas, hunting is not my strong point and I suffered injury while delivering the killing blow. The feast went well though and was a huge success with my guests. I must start moving more in the social circles and start climbing the feudal ladder. I now have a young family to provide for and an estate I need to pass on to them.

  14. Waltheof, Earl of Northampton My first objective was to produce an heir, so I set about finding a suitable bride and invited Princess Maior of Navarra to join me in matrimony. She is a good woman and will make a good mother for my children. You’d have thought that King Harold would have his hands full fighting two invasions, but he still had time to scheme against the powerful Duke Eadwin of Mercia. He invited me to join his plot to assassinate him, and who was I to refuse a request from my king? The deed was done, with consummate skill, and Eadwin departed this earth with a bad case of the ‘flu’ soon after. His brother, Duke Morcar of Deira, inherited all his titles, creating himself a very powerful demesne indeed! Soon after, King Harald of Norway tired of the war and sued for a white peace, which King Harold was only too happy to accept; he could now concentrate on repelling William from his lands. With the battlefield somewhat simplified, I took the opportunity to win favour with the King, raised my levies and set about re-sieging Westminster back from William. By January 1069 I had recovered the castle and moved on to relieve the city of London. By May I had liberated the city and started work on freeing St. Pauls, but soon after tragedy befell. King Harold passed away due to poor health, his brother, Gyrth, succeeding him. This reinvigorated the war effort and Gyrth wasted no time in calling up more troops to help defend England, joining me in my efforts in Middlesex. Together was won back Tottenham castle and the county, while the main contingent of the royal army was in Normandy, laying siege William’s holdings. With Middlesex won back, we headed north, King Gyrth started to liberate York, while I set to work freeing Durham. Once St Cuthbert cathedral was relieved the writing must have been on the wall for William, because on the first day of June 1070 he threw in the towel and begged for a white peace, which Gyrth was happy to accept. Just a day after the end of war, William died a mysterious death, while visiting the chamber of his beloved wife. His son, Robert, inherited without complications and promptly threw William’s grieving widow into the dungeon. Four weeks later, King Gyrth was back in the field again, having declared war on King Malcolm III of Scotland, to win back the county of Cumberland. As King Malcolm is my half brother I decided to sit this war out, only sending the required levy to fulfil my feudal obligations. I had more pressing matters to attend to anyway, as my wife had just announced that she was with child! I also took the time to assess the political landscape of the Kingdom. Three factions had developed during the wars with Normandy and Norway. Unsurprisingly, Duke Morcar of Mercia had designs on claiming the throne of England for himself and was looking for support for his claim. As yet he had found no supporters, but alone he accounted for half the strength of England. He was also involved in a faction looking to increase the power of the Royal Council, led by the Duke Leofwine of Kent, the King’s younger brother, and also supported by the Earl of Dorset. The Duke of Kent was also involved in a second faction, calling for a change of the succession law to Gavelkind, this faction being led by Prince Godwine, the late King Harold’s son. Looks like King Gyrth will have his hands full and could do with some support from a loyal subject or two..... On the eighth of February 1071 my son and heir, Siward was born and I had fulfilled my first and most important objective. Now to produce a second boy, as insurance of my family line, while I look to promote favour in the King’s eye and restore my family name to the position of prestige it deserves.
  15. Well, my first play through lasted three years, before a victorious King William of England led a plot against me and assassinated me at the second attempt. My second play through lasted two years, before a victorious King Harald of England took my title and left me landless. So far my third play through is going a little better.....
  16. Characters pt.2 - DD#17 Back in the 7th development diary we talked about Characters for the first time and talked about their attributes, traits and stats. If you haven’t read it yet, I recommend going back to read it here. We did not talk about health in that development diary, except mentioning the fact that one of the categories for traits were health-related. In the original Rome 1 & in the Crusader Kings series, health is a hidden value that the player never sees, which impacts hidden probabilities of when you die. In Imperator health is a value between 0 and 100, and when it reaches 0, that character dies. Health related traits affects this each month, but don’t expect that a brain-damaged frail leper to have a long life-expectancy. Holdings is another thing I promised to talk about. Each character can have holdings in one city. A governor picks a city in the province she is governing as where he’ll have his holdings, while a general picks one from the cities he may have conquered. A character with a holding will get income from that city until death, or until otherwise forced to relinquish it. Income ties into another concept I’d like to touch upon in today’s diary, ie Wealth. Each character have a pool of money that they may use to their own benefit. Characters gain money, if they have an office that pays them, or if they are a governor that can use their corruption to enrich themselves, or if they have holdings. So how do you interact with these characters then? Well, Imperator has lots of different ways, besides the normal event interactions like most of our games, we also have the direct character interactions.. Character Interactions usually have costs in power and or gold, and some have different chance of success as well, and in Republics, some of the character interactions require senate approval as well. Appoint Dictator - Can be done on your ruler in a republic when at war or civil war, and it will allow him to do any diplomacy or character interaction without Senate interfering until the end of the war. Assassinate - You can attempt to assassinate a foreign character. Banish - To force a character you have previously imprisoned to leave your country. Bribe - Increases the loyalty of that character. Execute - Permanently move a prisoner to another plane of existence. Free Hands - Increases Loyalty and Corruption if that character is one of your Governors. Hold Games - With a ruler in a republic, you can spend states money to increase the popularity of the current ruler. Imprison - Attempt to relocate someone to a more secure area for future processing. Inspire Disloyalty - Reduces loyalty and increases corruption of a foreign character. Loan - To get money from a wealthy character. They may want it back though. Marry Ruler - If different gender and both ruler and character is unmarried. Recruit - To get a character leave a foreign nation and work for you. Recruit General - Get a disloyal foreign general to leave his nation and join your nation. With his army. Release Prisoner - For bleeding-heart liberals.. Repay Loan - Sadly you can’t imprison and execute people you owe money… Sacrifice Prisoner - Some religions allow you to sacrifice prisoners taken in war, making your tribesmen happy and productive, and making it easier to stay tribal. Seek/Stop Treatment - For characters with bad health that you need to live longer or shorter. Seduce Governor - Convincing a foreign governor that it’s far better to officially say they are part of your nation, while they regretfully report that about 105% of all collected taxes were lost due to bad harvests and bandits to your government. Smear Character - To reduce the popularity of a character.
  17. The year is 1066 and I am but 16 years of age, having come into my majority at the beginning of this year. I am getting to grips with my position in life and it has certainly been a steep learning curve. Only three days after I became Earl, the King of England, Edward of Wessex, passed away childless. There were 4 contenders to the throne: Harold Godwinson, chief nobleman and Edward’s brother-in-law, Edgar Aetheling, son of Edward the Exile aged 14 years, William of Normandy who claimed he had been promised the throne in 1064 and Harald Hardrada King of Norway, successor of Magnus the Good who had been promised the throne of England by Harthacnut. The Royal Council decided that Harold Godwinson should be King and he was crowned immediately, to avoid a succession crisis. Disgruntled, the King of Norway began to plan an invasion of England, while to the south William, Duke of Normandy, was also making plans of his own. A week ago Harald Hardrada landed at the mouth of the river Tyne and started his invasion. He is currently laying siege to the city of York, while my Liege and King, Harold, races north to repel the invasion. The King has three thousand men, but has yet to raise his vassals levies, while Hardrada has almost twelve thousand men, including the recently exiles Tostig Godwinson, eager to reclaim his lands from the newly installed Duke Morcar of Deira.
  18. Introduction Greetings, my name is Waltheof, Earl of Northampton. I am the son of Siward, the late Earl of Northumbria, who passed away when I was but a boy. My mother and elder brother is also deceased and I am the last of our line, so finding a spouse and grooming an heir are foremost in my mind. Being second in line to my father’s titles, I was originally tutored for a role in the clergy, but on my brother’s death I was removed from the church and taught the elementary skills of statecraft. On my father’s death, King Edward appointed Tostig Godwinson as Earl of Northumbria, while I was promised Northampton on my maturity. This rankled me and it is my ambition to regain the lands my father previously held and restore my family’s name to the position it deserves. My court is made up of twelve individuals, most notable are Cerdic, the Bishop of Crowland, a repulsive glutton of a man, but one who has ambitions for greater glory, as ravenous as his appetite for the finer delicacies in life, and Hereberht, the Mayor of Cambridge, a cruel, hot tempered man, determined to make the most of his position, whatever the cost. Cerdic is currently my Chancellor and commander, while Herebenhrt is my Marshall, but both are unsuitable for these roles and will have to be carefully repositioned in my council, to avoid any unnecessary upheavals during my first year as Earl. In fact my whole council could do with a reshuffle, especially in light of recent events. If I am to survive my first year I need to make sure everyone is doing their job to the maximum of their abilities. The Earldom of Northampton is part of the Duchy of Essex, ruled by King Harold, while to the west is the Duchy of Mercia, administered by Eadwin, the most powerful Duke of the realm, brother to the Queen of England and Duke Morcar of Deira. Eadwin is steward and commander of England and is an ambitious, charismatic man, who lusts after even more power than he already possesses. Duke Morcar of Deira, the second most powerful Duke, rules the lands to the north, and is an advisor to the King and also a Commander of the Realm. He is a proud, ambitious schemer who, together with his brother, look to further their family’s prestige, whatever the cost. To the east is the Duchy of East Anglia, ruled by Gyrth of Godwin, the third most powerful Duke, who is brother to King Harold and Royal Marshall. Gyrth is a brave, skilled tactician who is the King’s right hand man and stout defender of realm. To the south is Duke Leofwine of Kent, the forth most powerful Duke, also brother to the King, and Spymaster to the realm. He is a cynical, craven man who is full of deceit and must be watched, as he guards the southern coast from what must only be a matter of time before William the Bastard arrives. The King controls all the land to the south-west, all the way down to the Earldom of Cornwall, which is run by Earl Cadoc, a just and devout man of celtic descent.

  20. Military Traditions - DD#15 There are seven different military traditions in the world, tied to which culture-group you have. Due to the size of the traditions and how they are structured you will see rather different and unique nations. Military Traditions unlock unique abilities, new units and give special bonuses to units. Each Military Tradition has one bonus they get from the start, and then three different paths they can go down through, where after you have picked the seventh tradition in that path, you’ll get the a special benefit for that as well. It is not very likely you will get to the end of all paths by the end of the game, so you really have to think about which path you want to progress down through first. One military tradition currently costs 800 military power, and each tradition taken increases the cost by 50%, and each military technology level reduces it by 25%. Today we’ll take a look at the Barbarian military tradition, which is used by most cultures in north-western Europe. They all start with the bonus to unlock Chariots as a unit. Chariots are relatively cheap, and faster than infantry, and utterly destroys light infantry on the battlefield. The first path of the Barbarian Traditions is the Britannic Path.
