Most definitely Star Trek, Transformers and Harry Potter, don't know about anything else yet. Usually I decide to catch a movie, then pick one that seems cool.

So... I saw Wolverine last week. It was alright. Not bad, but not particularly great either -- didn't grab me nearly as much as the 'proper' X-Men movies. Seems kinda cool in theory to get these kind of backstories but in practice it's falling a little flat. Not a hardcore X-Men fan so don't know the comics, most of these characters meant nothing to me and the movie didn't do much to change that.

Going to see Trek on Monday, hoping that will be better.

Wow, just saw Star Trek: 5 out of 5 (we need a Vulcan greeting smilie )

Very, very fast-paced movie, a true rollercoaster ride with a ton of action and a lot of humour. Featuring plenty of nice character moments, a good story, excellent dialogue and terrific acting, this movie had a great energy and excitement about it that no previous Trek movie had. It's perhaps not as cerebral as previous films in the series, but it was fun. I'm sure the hardcore Trekkies will despise JJ Abrams for what he's done to this franchise but to me this is the reboot Trek badly needed (without getting all dark and moody a la BSG, which would've been a betrayal of Roddenberry's vision IMO).

This is a great summer flick for everyone, even people who don't know the first thing about ST, although you'll appreciate the references all the more if you do -- "I'm givin' her all she's got, captain!"

    Spoiler:
    The redshirt snuffs it!

I also just saw Star Trek. Wow indeed.

They make the plot mean something to you. You actually feel for the characters, you worry about what might happen to them, you worry about what the villain might do.

That was the fatal flaw with Star Trek: Insurrection and Star Trek: Nemesis. Their villains were pansies. The entire storyline of those movies was weak because the villains' evil deeds weren't on an astronomical scale -- this is science fiction set on a galactic level after all.

The new Star Trek is able to do this -- you realize that for these heroes and villains, actions actually have meaningful consequences.

    You are commending STXI's villain?

    Spoiler:
I am in past. I shall spend decades exacting revenge instead of changing the timeline in Romulan favour. Hell, I might hand them my advanced technology and have them conquer the Alpha Quadrant.

    Commending? Not exactly.

But he's waaay better than that idiot putz Shinzon. All throughout ST: Nemesis I was just waiting for Picard to grab him and snap his spine in half.

    Spoiler:
Nero: I am insane. I shall recklessly destroy entire planets just to exact my revenge on one man. Planets were threatened in other Trek movies, but always saved by the heroes. I actually destroy a major inhabited planet before they can stop me, killing billions of people.

Touche. Shinzon is a prime example of a great concept completely and utterly botched up. Nemesis was a high budget low quality fanfiction.

And I could say the same thing about Insurrection. It was just one big TNG episode. The plot was utterly mediocre and insignificant. During that whole movie I was asking myself why I should care about any of it. DS9 was having massive wars with the Dominion on TV, and TNG was resolving petty disputes in the "Briar Patch?" Seriously?

And Ru'afo was a pathetic waste of a villain. His evil power is bad face lifts? Seriously? I was just waiting for Picard to grab him and snap his spine in half.

Insurrection > Nemesis --> Generic TV two-parter episode > Fanfiction.

First Contact was the last Star Trek movie (prior to this one) that was worth anything. Earth was in actual danger, the Borg are actually scary villains, and the plot was actually interesting.

Still... I wasn't particularly worried about the Borg Queen. But it sure was satisfying to see Picard actually grab her spine and snap it in half. We knew he was tough. We just had to wait in order to see it, and no TNG movie afterwards could live up to that moment.
