From what I see on this screenshot, it seems territorial waters are limited to those adjacent to cities. At least, I see land hexes extend twice as far as sea hexes adjacent to cities.

Looks like they took the water generator out of Civ4Col too in that screenie. I hope we can turn the grid off.

Pretty sure there was a grid-less pic. http://www.civilization5.com/img/scr...eenshot_01.jpg (unless my colorblindness has gone REAL bad lately)

why does the border look all funky? in the second ring you have 4 tiles on the NW but only 3 to SW. No coast hexes or something?

Considering that conceding land seems to be a diplomacy option, it's very possible that your border isn't just automatic fat cross-shaped culture radiation, but must be claimed/expanded in some fashion.

    Cheers, LT.

Actually I believe that the border is the Tan color, and the red is just some civil disobedience...

Notice that the far north of Geo's picture link is three hexes from the city and still in the cultural borders. I wonder if this is because of open terrain enabling his influence to extend further, or because of the presence of troops?

Land trading has been introduced into diplomacy so maybe it's from that?

Interesting (same screenshot) the forest NE of the horses is not in borders, yet the farm E of the horses is. Maybe the borders connect between cities instead of a fixed distance from the city.

True, but it doesn't seem that anyone else could have 'owned' that hex originally. It does seem a very irregular zone of influence, will be interesting to see what defines it.....

    Hmmmm...... good point. I'm perplexed.

It could also just be a mocked up image for the purpose of the announcement.

that must be it. these borders don't look like a ring or fat cross. it must be a world builder shot with some arbitrary borders. probably explains why there is no interface or city names in the shot either.

There is a screenshot on the Civ5 website that would indicate that you can.

    As is to be expected.

Okay, updated with some unconfirmed info from that Danish magazine.

It looks like we're getting more visual realism this time, suggesting a more "serious" gaming experience/atmosphere--as opposed to the cartoony feel of Civ4. Hopefully this won't be completely ruined by terrible voice acting, which I seem to have experienced in so many games.

I believe previous Civ games have had visual realism, but I forget if Civ4 was the only cartoony one.

The hexagon-grid could turn out very refreshing to the series; I think it makes more sense for ranged attacks.

Wild speculation: Given that land (tiles) can be traded, perhaps culture can now be "directed", so that the player has some sort of influence on where to expand cultural borders. This way, you could expand more than a single tile into water perhaps.

I find the complaint of Civ 4 being cartoony not very fair. Yes, it was cartoony as all Civ games had been to an extent, but Civ 3 was the mos cartoony game, taking it to, at times, farcial levels.
