View Full Version : June '09 GOTM

Well it is the 1st of June and as promised here is the game I designed. Players will be controlling the Drones.

I intended the game to be difficult, but I doubt anyone will experience any major problems completing the game. It is a scenario game that starts at turn one with some advantages given to the AI factions. As such you will need to play the scenario through the scenario option on the main game menu.

(I can't think of anything else to add at the moment so I guess I will just wish everyone good luck.)

I'm giving this a go. Let me see if I can get the scenario installed (otherwise, that is good information to include).

Unzip it to your scenarios folder inside the main Alpha Centauri folder.
Start the game, and from the main menu, select "Scenario --> Play Scenario --> Domai of the Drones, 2101.SC"

There is an option to pick difficulty level, I left that option in in case some lesser skilled members wanted to give it a try but are unable to play on transcend level.

Rubin

Yeah, Russia4Life, that should do it. I initially just put the file into the save folder, but did manage to get it running.

For the players, please do respect spoiler tags.

Uhm, I lost my first base at around 2115. I am very, very rusty. I shall have another go.

Rubin

Ok, Russia4Life, do you want this to be a competitive scenario, in that I cannot post spoilers in this thread. Or can I freely "spoiler" my high definition progress here?

If you want a competitive spirit, I just archive my notes and post the whole thing by the end of the month (if I've finished the scenario by then). Otherwise, I'll spoiler-warn the thread and post my rusty progress.

zsozso

The idea was to make this into a monthly competition, so it would be best if you post the narrative at the end of the month.

I am inclined to agree with zsozso. Though I can understand the desire to post ones accomplishments/failures, and discuss with other players possible strategies. Doing so can add some fun and keep things interesting.

If you really wish to type out your progress though, I would suggest in a separate thread maybe with the title "June '09 GOTM-Spoiler" Use of spoiler tags on in game information would be required though.

Maybe further discussion on the concept of a discussion/spoiler thread would be needed. I don't feel like I should be making a unilateral ruling on this.

I don't think further discussion on spoilers are needed. This is a competition, and it's no problem archiving notes until the competition is closed.

What do you mean like an in game screen shot of this scenario? I can get one for you right now if that is what you want.

Got a question for everyone, I just finished my first game. I got a cooperative conquest victory... Will those be counted as the same as a regular conquest? I did have the last faction submissive to me and could have finished them off years prior.

According to the manual, cooperative conquest means the points are split between pact mates. However, I don't think it applies to submissives (pacts that have surrendered to you).

I wasn't worried about the points. I know that submissive pacts do not take away from conquest points. I was asking how my victory type should be classified. Is there going to be a cooperative victory thing and a conquest. Seems like you could end up with alot of different victory conditions if you do it that way. The game lists my score as conquest so I'd suggest counting a cooperative victory the same as a normal one.

vyeh

There is also cooperative diplomatic, cooperative economic and cooperative trancendent victories. I would ignore cooperative and classify the victory as the second word.

Can I submit multiple entries for different victory types ? E.g. one for conquest another for transcendence ?

vyeh

I think multiple submissions are allowed in CFC. In any event, I don't see a problem with multiple submissions.

Russia4Life
05-06-09, 00:53
Do one for each victory type if you want. I am likely only going to do 2 games. I already finished a conquest. I might do a Transcend game, still debating if I want to play a game lasting that long or not.

zsozso
06-06-09, 02:42
I've done the conquest too and will do a transcend. I guess I should not post the save and the narration yet, not to spoil the fun for others while the competition is active. However, it might be interesting and create more exciting competitive atmosphere if we post the AC-score and finish year information. That does not give away anything from the strategy or how it was done, but it sets a goal for others what to beat. ;)
What do you think ? Should we post those 2 numbers ?

Russia4Life

I'll show you mine if you show me yours... LOL

zsozso

OK, I got cooperative conquest victory in 2169, nobody eliminated, 1 normal Pact, the rest is all submissive, AC-score 1124, so that makes a GOTM-score: 1124 / 34.5 = 32.58

Russia4Life
08-06-09, 18:22
beat me by alot :( 1366 point in 2287.

zsozso
11-06-09, 20:05
I have transcended in 2211, AC score 3909, so GOTM-score: 3909 / 55.5 = 70.43

The micromanagement was a bit painful at the end, I have played a lot of fast-transcend games before, but never with Drones on this large map... I had to work a lot more than what is needed for more research-friendly factions.

ps: just realized, this is the 11th day of the month and I did the transcend victory of the GOTM in 111 turns :) This is the day of the 1s:woohoo::bounce:

Hmm... I only just discovered this, and I just might give it a go.

Also, can I have next on posting a game? Like, can I do July? Because I've got something in mind.

bdanv
18-06-09, 08:20
we already have a proposal for July's GOTM from zsozso, but any scenario is welcome.

zsozso, do you think 'The Ultimate Builder Challenge' can wait for one more month so we can have Tarvork's scenario in July?

also, please use this (http://www.weplayciv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=431) thread to make proposals for GOTM.

Do we have some special way of submitting games? or it is just attaching the file to this thread? I mean completed game for scoring.

No special way as far as I know, just attach to a post.

Here is my conquest victory entry attached. Russia4Life was asking for a save at the end of each 50-turn period, plus the final save just before the victory. Unfortunately, I did not save just before the victory as I was not expected Santiago to surrender at that point -- she had one more base further away that would have taken me a couple turns more to reach, but she surrendered when I took her second-to-last base, so the game ended suddenly. So I choose the "lemme play a few more turns" option, and then saved the game. So in the final save of 2174 the game is already won.

Here is a short description of major events (there are 2 gaps where I got carried away in the game and forgot to take notes):

2106 got Yang's comlink from pod, made treaty, 2 turns later made pact
2108 got InfNet from pod
2116 got Deirdre's comlink from Yang, bought Miriam's from Deirdre, Treaty with Miriam
got map of Miriam for tech in trade
first research PlaNet completed in 2118, switched to Planned
2119 traded PlaNet for Cent.Ecol with Miriam
2121 Spartans came to my territory, threatened me for 50 EC, accepted 20, made treaty
2121 got Zak's comlink from Deirdre, made treaty with her and Zak too
traded PlaNet for Social Psych with Zak
2123 made Pact with Santiago
2126 got IndEco, switched to FreeMarket, started researching IndAuto
2127 traded 3 tech pairs with Santiago, got techs for impact rovers
2128 settled 8th city, initial expansion completed, making formers everywhere
2131 Deirdre called election, 4 candidates Deirdre(10), Yang(11), Aki(10), Domai(10),
got elected with Spartan(5) support, made treaty with Aki
2132 got IndAuto, traded that, IndBase, IndEco for EthCalc and GeneSpl and EcoEng with Aki, made Pact
2133 traded 2 techs with Deirdre: got ProgPsych, Doc:loyalty for EcoEng and IndEco
traded Doc:loyalty for Doc:flex with Santiago
2134 Foreman Domai is TECHNOLOGY and overall leader with 16 technologies!
2140 rushed Command Nexus with crawlers, switching to Planned from Freemarket, building impact rovers
traded IndAuto for IntInt with Gaia
2142 got Polymorphic software for GeneSplicing from Sparta
2144 stole Biogen from Yang, he pronounced vendetta (but my impact rovers are moving towards him already)
trade IntInt for SOHB with Aki, also PolySoft for CentEmp

...

2154 Yang surrendered, upgraded 3 crawlers to armor-3t and started building PTS, switched to Demo.
2155 turned in 3 crawlers to complete PTS
2158 took over Godvinson's Hope, accepted 100EC bribe for truth -> Treaty
2159 got Air-power, started massive Missile Penetrator production
2160 took over New Jerusalem
2161 took over The Rapture, Miriam surrendered, interestingly she refuses to buy my techs!?
2162 Air-strike on Budushi Dvor, rover attack on Climatic Research
2163 took over Climatic Research, Zak surrendered
2165 took Fallow Time (Gaian), accepted 125EC bribe for truth
2166 took Gaia's Landing, Lily of the Valley, Dreams of Green
2167 took 3 more Gaian bases but she wouldn't submit...
2168 took Autumn Grove, Deirdre finally surrendered, but not before Santiago denounced the Pact, so no victory...
2169 mind controlled over Ironholm from Spartans, gave back bases to Hive, Gaians, and Uni, got AdvMilAlg from Zak
...
2174 Spartans finally surrender when they only have 1 empty base left :) => conquest victory AC-score 1171

I also have more game-saves, basically at the end of every 10 turns upto 2150, then every single turn from 2157 to the end. If anybody is interested in those for more in-depth analysis, I will try to find a way to upload them somewhere, just let me know.

Here is my entry for the transcend category. I actually played differently from the 2160 game save of the conquest game, so the first 60 turns are "shared" between the 2 games. This time, I distributed the captured bases between submissive pacts, renounced my pact with Miriam, because she did not want to participate in the tech-trading and then conquered Spartans a bit more efficiently (faster) than I did in the first conquest attempt, then gave back her bases too and started focused research in FM (disbanding all air-planes in cities to help building research facilities faster). Each time I traded around all techs, so everybody had all the techs and they kept giving me extra techs that they researched (and that I sold again to others). It was cooperative effort, Zak, Aki and Deirdre all contributed to the research significantly. There was one major hicup I documented:

2178 sunspots start, really bad timing, I just got PreSentAlg also being researched by 3 others within 20 turns,
that means I can't sell it to them => I lost the chance to get 3 new techs from them + a lot of EC loss too!
2188 sunspot ended! isn't it supposed to last 20 turns ?
salvage unity fusion core, collect EC and techs => 4649 EC, time to rush hybrid forests
...
2211 transcended AC score 3909, pop 601, com 1433, tech 83, SP 550, Obj 1242

Again, I have all the saves from 2160 to the victory (at the end of each turn), so if you are interested let me know.

first submission:
zsozso wins by conquest in 2174. AC score 1171. GOTM score: 31.65

actually, this one was better:

OK, I got cooperative conquest victory in 2169, nobody eliminated, 1 normal Pact, the rest is all submissive, AC-score 1124, so that makes a GOTM-score: 1124 / 34.5 = 32.58

why haven't you submitted it? because it was a cooperative victory?

zsozso
30-06-09, 19:00
Good point Dan, but unfortunately I can't find that save now. I may have overwritten it when I did the transcend victory game. However, from the 2169 save of the transcend I could easily make a 2170 conquest victory, with AC score 1152, so that is still better than my above submission. So, here is a better conquest result. All you need to do from the save is to move the rover into the empty Spartan base, then Santiago calls up, then you first refuse the peace on the first offer, then she offers to surrender, you accept and it is game over.

Although it is a re-play from the 2160 save of the original conquest game (submitted above) so I am not sure if it qualifies -- I leave that up to the jury :)

bdanv
30-06-09, 19:44
..I leave that up to the jury :)

i can validate :detective: the entries and keep track of the scoring :1st: if that's ok with you.
i won't submit entries for the GOTM (at least not this month). this should guarantee some fairness. :cmn:

Do we have a deadline? I try to complete the game till morning, but probably I will have to conquer everyone, coz no time for transcendence... :)

bdanv
01-07-09, 04:34
if we use the CFC system, the deadline should be the first Sunday after the 5th of the following month at 12:00 (Noon) GMT. but in this case it's not a good idea to post the submissions here. you should send them to the jury instead.

hmm, i think we should have finished the rules of the competition by now!

Ok, I got the conquest. MY 2239 with 1744 points. Score is probably: 1744/69.5= 25.09

So I have to email the save to whom?

Mart, please post here your submission.
The rules for submitting the GOTM have been published too late (see the admin. thread here (http://www.weplayciv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1087)) so we will use them starting with the July's game.

Submission for the GOTM0906 will be due on Sunday, Jully 12th, at 12:00 (Noon) GMT.

if you see any mistakes in the admin. thread (http://www.weplayciv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1087) or if you have any idea on how to improve the admin. part of this competition please feel free to post it here (http://www.weplayciv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=431).
