MetalNES I (Please do not post in this thread until I give the ok)

This is the restart of PrimoNES, which was the first NES on WPC. It was requested by some of the players that we start on a new Earth map instead of the one that I drew myself. (no offence taken) I have tweaked these rules and incorporated some requested changes into this version.

MetalNES I is still a fresh-start NES, which means that although it is on an Earth map, the Civilizations are entirely the creations of the players themselves.

How do I play?

Create a country.

Please use this template:

Nation Name:
Leader Name (and Forum Handle):
Capital City Name:
Army: S
Navy: S
Economy: S
Tech: (S:0) (M:0) (I:0) (L:0) (E:0)
EP: 2
Cities: 1 insert city names here;
Color (don't pick white):
History: (can impact any bonuses your civilization gets so write a good paragraph how did you come to be?)

Use Diplomacy

Example: (( Bria wants to gain Jono’s mining technology ))

To: Jono
From: Bria

I will give you 3 EPs if you show my people how to mine the ore from the hills.

((Jono then responds))

To: Bria
From: Jono

We agree

((Both sides will be held to the trade at this point))
Submit Orders

You can post orders in the thread, which makes for a better overall story; however some situations may require you to send them privately (war for instance) when you don’t want your enemy to know about your plans.

A basic example of orders

Subject: MetalNES I orders

Spend 1 EP on increasing the army
Spend 1 EP on Land technology
Spend 1 EP on Super Broccoli Flats wonder

Invade the southern portion of France using the bulk of my military (85%), leaving only a token force behind for defense from other countries. (note when giving military orders always give a % of your force to help weigh in battles)

((This is a bare-bones order, which is fine for a PM. When posting orders in thread, try to add some story elements to it as well.))

That is about it, this should only take 15 minutes tops between updates.

Updates

This is when the battles are fought and the results of your orders come to fruition. Also the map will be updated to show territorial expansion, and the tech tree will be advanced if necessary too.

That being said, here are some definitions that may come in handy.

1. EP
EP stands for Economic Point, and EPs function as in-game currency. They can be traded between players, earned, stockpiled, and spent. If you are bribing barbarians, it will cost EP.

2. Cities
Each City produces one base EP for every update. So, if I have 3 Cities, then I can expect 3 EP if everything else remains peaceful/disaster free. Cities don't produce EP when they are being attacked, when there is a natural disaster, or when there is a revolt. You can spend EP to create additional cities, or conquer cities from your enemies.

3. Technology
You can research Science, Military, Infrastructure, Land, and Economic techs. The costs vary depending on how advanced the tech is compared to other civs.

Science technologies make other research paths less expensive. Other tech research could be hampered if there is not sufficient science behind it.

Military technologies make your army and navy more effective in battle.

Infrastructure technologies make your civilization expand faster and allow you to manage larger empires.

Land technologies help you exploit natural resources and obtain materials needed for outfitting your military.

Economic technologies help you gain more EP per turn.

4. Military
Army and Navy are treated the same, you can have a Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large, or Double Extra Large Army or Navy (S, M, L, XL, XXL respectively). Each increase gets progressively more expensive for your nation. Stories will have a great impact on upkeep costs for armies, all other things being equal, upkeep costs will take 1 EP per turn for Army size above M. So S=free M=1 L=2 XL=3 XXL=4

5. Territory
Any turn you are not at war, your nation will peacefully expand until there is no more white area for the people to go. Of course Territory is usually acquired via war.

6. Trade
Trade has been simplified, just post to the country you wish to establish trade with. When they say yes, you have a trade route established, which will increase your EP.

7. NPCs
Non Player Countries or NPCs are countries that I will run. This means that negotiating with those countries will be answered by me. NPCs are always open for new players to take over.

8. Ending
This is a Never Ending Story, so ideally it will go on indefinitely; however, a point will probably arise where one person is the clear 'winner' or people get caught up with other things, or whatever. At that time awards get handed out based on performance in the game, and usually a new game is started.

Nation Name: Funglish Dominion
Leader Name (and Forum Handle): M M Calahoun (MMC)
Capital City Name: Fungolia

Tech: (S:1) (M:0) (I:0) (L:0) (E:1)
EP: 2
Cities: 1
Color (don't pick white): Red
History: Not much is known about the culture and private life of the Funglish Dominion. When entertaining guests, they will go to great lengths to recreate something resembling the home of the visitor. No-one outside the Dominion has ever seen the inside of a Funglish home, nor has anyone heard the native Funglish tongue.

What little is known about the Funglish has either been inferred by their actions, or accidentally leaked by younger members of Funglish, who have not had as much experience with outsiders as the Elders.

The one tenet of Funglish society that they will openly admit to, is their fixed stance against slavery and caste-based systems. Even during their famous reconstructions devised to the benfit of guests, they will never allow the use of slaves or 'lesser' workers. Any slaves in the visiting party will be treated with equal rights as the slave owner.

The lack of children visible to any outsiders has led some to speculate that the Funglish are actually a race of immortal beings, with no need to reproduce. More common wisdom holds that the children are merely hidden away until they are old enough and wise enough to entertain guests. Some younger Funglish have let slip snippits that point towards the use of an apprentice based education system and a fairly flexible system of allocated vocations.

Due to the fact that the Funglish often seem to know a lot about a visitor's home before they even meet, many believe the Funglish standing army to consist of mostly scouts and spies. However, several skirmishes with barbarian hordes have shown that all Funglish citizens (male and female alike) receive training and the Funglish can raise a large disciplined army at very short notice.

The Funglish Navy is similar to the army in it's dual role nature, however it can be much more formidable. Funglish fishing boats have been spotted sporting large spiked rams on the prow, and most sightings of the fishing fleet show at least two of the ships patrolling on guard duty whilst the others cast their nets.

Finally, it is known that the Funglish Dominion is led by a group of Elders, but it is not known who among the Elders is in charge. The one face among the Elders who is known to the outside world is Calahoun (pronounced Ca-la-hoon), who is present at every meeting with a foreign national. His exact role is unknown, but many consider him to be the Funglish equivilent of a Foreign Minister.

History: The Texans developed their own genius method for keeping track of the time, and kept a record of their history using this creative method. The bountiful, lovely land of Texas was first traveled by the Spanish Conquistadors. They established missions all over the land, spreading their Catholic faith to the heathen Injuns. The Spanish eventually would grant an area of land to Moses Austin. Moses, unlike the Moses from the Bible, died before he could lead his people to the promised land. His son Stephen started to lead the people into Texas right when the Mexicans had overthrown the Spanish. The Mexican government told Austin that the settlers had to convert to Catholocism and respect the Tejanos currently living there. Austin hand picked 297 families to go with him, and the "Old Three Hundred" started on their journey. In a short bit of time, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna rose to power, and defied the Constitution of 1821. The Texans rebelled against the Mexicans, eventually defeating them convincingly at San Jacinto screaming "Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!". They would go on to force Santa Anna to surrender and recognize Texan independence. Texas went on to be a Republic, under the leadership of Sam Houston (and the lack thereof when "led" by Lamar). Texas then admitted to be a state in the USA, lost the Civil War, and continued to be awesome, wealthy, and large to this day. Don't Mess With Texas!!

History:

Despite the name of their leader, The Alaskan nation is not a nation of Eskimos. They are instead a group of rather intelligent people that have migrated from the area of Asia know as Russia. Their leader Eskimo Joe took on the name Eskimo after arriving in Present day Alaska. Upon arrival, he found a tribe of Eskimos that his men quickly slaughtered, after pillaging the village and having their way with the womenfolk. The leader (formerly Joe Momma) was given the nickname Eskimo Joe, this was done as a joke by some of the higher ranking generals after the battle. The name however caught on and is still in use today.

They also firmly believe that with knowledge comes power. This is evident in some of their earlier skirmishes with the Eskimo tribes. The Alaskan nation has found itself outnumbered in several retaliatory battles following the massacre of the Eskimo village, but due to their advanced tactical knowledge and their superior weapon technology were able to successfully defend their newly conquered land from attack with minimal casualties. Since then there has been very little contact with other Eskimo tribes.

Though the beginnings of the Alaskan nation have a brutal story behind it. The leaders of Alaska would much rather spend their resources on improving their new homeland, on research, and on peaceful expansion. Do not be fooled by their peacetime behavior though, the Alaskans are a very proud people who will gladly give their lives in defense of their new found home.

History: The German People were always admired for their creativity and knowledge in the various traits of science and philosophy. Long before the other nations were carved out of time, the Germans were already there, documenting and recording silently what was going on on the other sides of their border. The Germans are descendants of the approximately twenty families who began settling upon their bountiful and beautiful strip of land two centuries ago when they were expulsed from their former communities for their steadfast belief in Thor and his heavenly council, which awaits every mortal soul after its death, according to their faith. Since the great expulsion from the former homeland, the various German tribes wandered restlessly on the land, until they found a new and promising place which they happily referred quickly as their new home. They called it "Germany", for their respect of their hero Germanius who first led them into exile under his leadership. Just for his sake, the multitudes of the Germanes survived the long and troublesome journey after their forced exodus and from the day of his death onwards, they always crowned the oldest son of his dynasty as their new king. Bismarck, his great-grandson, is a young emperor but his motivation and eagerness to lead his people into a brighter future outweights all his shortcomings by a long run.

The Citizen Army

Jorise is a nation very different from others. It was ruled not my a Military Leader, but by a seasoned Philosopher, a regular bar customer, and a diplomat. Likewise their people are not used to fight to the death: they fight for honor, for new lands, for adventure, or defense, not at the total will of the King.

When the King orders a war, and listed a percentage of the 'Army' to march out, that army will certainly march. But let us look deep into the mecanics of these 'Armies.'

In other Kingdoms, Armies usually consists of warriors trained for years for battle supplemented by levies. The Warriors often lived at the frontier, hunting, chopping trees and hoping to chop heads, meeting with their Company (a group of 'Companions' with a leader) every so often. The Levies are just farmers: every family sends one or two. They often fight for fear or for pay.

The Jorii were like this, but their nature slowed turned them. Although war is still used in this crowded envioment, the basic feeling of it changed. The Army consists of simple citizens, of which every family sends one male for basic formation training. When a attack is called, the companies volenteer for parts in campaigns. With a strong brotherhood and close knowlege with each other, the indivisual companies in a Campaigning division are encouraged to improvise, to find new things, to collect suveniers for home. This is how Jorise have survived, and this is how it will continue to survive, far into the future.

The Texas Tribune
Volume 1, Issue 1

In recent diplomatic affairs, President Texas Tommy Joe Bubba Williams seemed to have gotten himself into a huge mess. At first it seemed that he was the diplomatic mastermind: establishing highly profitable trade with the Chiron, Germany, and Blood Crescent Clan, signing a defensive pact with the Chiron, and negotiating a war to take down the Mexicans. Then Mexican leader Jon El Pancho made a desperate attempt to stop the war effort, offering any of the three attacking parties a good sum of money if they refused to attack Mexico. President Bubba remained calm, convincing the Chiron and the Clan to ignore the Mexican's frantic pleas for peace. Only time will tell if the Clan and Chiron will follow through on the deal.

In other news, the world waits to see what the Jorise have been plotting to unleash. They remain mainly in the shadows in diplomatic affairs, but it seems that they have come to some sort of agreement with the BCC. Nobody has any idea what to expect to come out of this fiasco.

Carolina, Alaska, Yukon, and the Funglish Dominion remain quiet and to this point have stayed completely out of all the diplomatic hubbub.

UPDATE 1!

The War of Texan Aggression
True Mexico, seeing the inevitability of the invasion spent all its resources in increasing its army size and moving its population back towards Dos Equis. The Texan army with the largest percentage devoted, was awarded the largest chunk of captured territory. Chiron was next, followed by the Blood Crescent Clan, which sent a token force through Texas, the vast majority of the army deciding to settle the lands to the west.

The Northlands
Alaska has increased her territory, while her trade partner Yukon, has devoted resources to establishing a new city. Conveniently located along the river in order to facilitate trade.

Middle America
Germany has expanded rapidly using the rivers as highways. Jorise and Germany had a brief exchange of goods and ideas to create a temporary trade for this turn.

The Gulf of Mexico
Fungolian ships were out quickly, colonizing the Florida Keys and part of Cuba. Jorisean and Chironian ships also established colonies on Cuba, whereas Texan ships, late to the party due to distance, had to settle for an island south of Cuba. Speaking of Cuba, there is a nation of native Cubans that is very much against imperialism and Capitalism. We will see what lies in store for this island.

Power of the Clouds

Uthiel was playing outside with her doll: today was rest day, after four weeks of farm work, and tomarrow was the start of School Day, but today, she can have some fun, and enjoy the sunset.

She lifted her doll, carved from a Corn Cob and dressed in soft birch, it had hair made with silken corn truffles and was carved smooth. The wind blew the dress so that it pushed against the legs. She turned her head sideways, and like any other child, asked questions and answered them herself.

Why does wind push things... Wind must be caused by water, because it is windy near rain near sea. Wind push thin dress, hard to hold. Maybe I tie dress to waist. tight, make doll more like me.

She smiled and looked at her own belt, then started weaving some grass and tied the grass-belt arround the doll. Then she heard a yell and looked down the hill. A group of men were pulling the boat with oars. She heard them grunt and thought:

Sea Has water, Sea has wind, wind push things, wind push so they don't grunt. No grunt no yell at play-day.

She ran into the valley and up to mom. "Mom, see boatmen yelling and crying?"

"Yes Dear' said her mother, and she hugged her daughter, "It annoys me alot, but it is for trade."

"Mom, wind push things. Wind can push big things well. Can wind push a big dress on boat to push it?"

"Dear... it... might work... Wind is commen arround water sweetie. I'll tell Papa."

"Thanks mom, look at the grass belt!"

She had returned to thinking about this rest day: It was perfect today, with a little wind. She looked at her doll's dress rustle in the wind, and thought about why the wind pushes things.

Fine. Peace is declared between our two mighty and glorious nations. If you want your land back, I am all ears for any offer you might make.

((Shouldn't Mexico's "agreements with other nations" go in the Pact section?))

I have declared peace with you. Would you like me to sign some sort of Non Aggression Pact as well? I will do what it takes to prove to you that I have no further wishes to attack your proud nation.

From Jorise

I have heard your war has ended. PEACE PREVAILS! Now, I want to open trade with all of you, and exchange goods. Why? Becasue one: our food is the best Soul Food in the world! Chili and potpurries! Second, [:joke:] we want Tobacco (From the North), Marajuana (From Mexico) and Diseased Cow Meat (Fron Texus.). Finally, I want all of you to be addicted to my products. [/:joke:]

We also have the respectable knowledge of Jorii Healthy Cusine Level 1: Light Gumbo and Bean Chili. Care to trade for the knowledge of how to use our products?

Nation Name: Jorise
Leader Name (and Forum Handle): Hath'ruthi (Chuckthegreat)
Capital City Name: Yuthouri
Army: M Upkeep 1ep/turn
Navy: S
Bonus: Rudimentary Science Knowledge; Bonus to philosophical research.
Tech: (S:1) (M:0) (I:0) (L:0) (E:0) 1:3 for Science level 2
EP: 3 (+1 Story +2 trade -1 upkeep)
Cities: 1 insert city names here; Hanthel, Tersion, Keneeth, Renth, Trodai, Gaindi.
Color (don't pick white): Purple
History:

Hath'ruthi spread out the Map of the land: To the North are Germans, friendly, but blocking most land expansion. Same goes with the BCC and the Chiron: He would have to invade one of these three for living space of his people, but until then, peace will prevail.

Trade is established with Texas and BCC. Looking over his harbor he saw the galleys, oared by hundreds of men and the newest sailsboats, with sails looking like huge underpants, tested out on light boats, lighter than the heavy galleys. Although he knew that a single ram can tear them apart, their manuverability and archers could turn the tide in a battle, as well as reduce mouths to feed on voyages. Acting as cavalry, they will be a good part of his navy.

About a Fifth of his navy, as well as his army, would be sent to go west from the Cuban Colony, about a tenth of his Army and Navy will defend Cuba. Another Fifth of his army and navy will defend the Homeland.

A fourth of the Army and of the Navy will travel north, until they are past the Germany, and settle a large colony north of Germany for trade.

The rest will backfill the land between Germany and Jorise, as wella s travel up the side rivers of Tenesee and Cumberland.

He decided to create a city near the Tri-national borders of Germany/BCC/Jorise. As soon as the borders stabilized the city will be built, as a trading post, a fort, and as a northern villa from the southern heat. He decided that during the winter schools will be run in the new city.

He didn't like how much the Army Costs, but he knew that to be a diplomat... one must speak softly, and carry a big stick.

Mod's Corner

So I have the morning off tomorrow, which means if I have everyone's orders in tonight we could have the next update a day early! I'll be on tonight for NPC diplomacy. If I need to delay it to Thursday I will.

As far as special projects are concerned, for special projects put in your orders what you want to do, and how many turns/EP you think it will take, and I will assign a bonus at the update.

For technology, I want to treat it more like special projects where you say in your orders what technology you want, then I can put what it is. So for example if someone wants to research Bronze Working, they would put that in their orders and I would give the requirements (i.e. Science level 1 for melting technology, land level 1 for mining technology, military level 2 for organized troops.) I think this could help facilitate trade of technology without being too confusing, and will eliminate some of the story basis currently required.

Unique Units (UUs) can be created as well. If you want one, we'll treat it like technology and special projects, only a UU won't cost EP, just a solid story explaining what they are good at (+1 attacking/defending/movement).

If there is something you want to do for story purposes or because you think it would be cool I will generally allow it. If you want an NPC involved, please PM me so we can work something out that will make this a fun thread to read as well as participate in.

Subject: MetalNES I orders

Spend 2 EP on building a new city "Planet."

Leave 15% of the Army in the recently conquered territory. Send the remaining army from the Mexican crusade and the necessary navy to transport them south along the coast to explore and claim empty territory.

Send half of the Navy that is on the islands to the south of Chiron to the east to explore the islands. Send one quarter of the Navy that is on the island back to Chiron to pick up a garrison for the new island holdings. The remaining quarter remain to guard the new island territory.

The Chiron researchers discover that the new land technology will allow greater growth in the territories through plants that are attractive to our citizens.
