View Full Version : New Arcade games
Two new games have been added to the Arcade: Pacman and Pinball. Have fun getting some new high scores!
Please use this thread to suggest other games that we should add in the future -- that'll be a lot easier than us having to scour the forums for suggestions... Please note that the games need to be published in the right arcade format (either V3Arcade or IBProArcade), not just any Flash game will work. But if you don't shoot you can't score, so request away! Just bear in mind that we may not be able to deliver (you can find a huge list of available games here: http://www.tafreehmela.com/software/14349-vb-ibpro-arcade-games.html -- if it's not on there you'll have to provide a link for us to be able to add your game).
Mind you, we don't plan on adding new games every week -- probably more like every month -- but hopefully often enough to keep the arcade fresh and interesting for a long time to come.

Thanks much, variety and a most pleasant alternative to Off Topic:yes:
Thank you, guys!!
You do realize that we are the only Civ site with an Arcade section, do you?

Thank you Locutus.
But what are the keys for pinball? There are no instructions?
And could someone please approve the files I uploaded? :)

The Z button left flipper
The / button is right flipper
press the DOWN ARROW to launch a ball
Hope this helps because i also saw no instructions sir
Pinball is bugged. I recommend its immediate removal.
I was on my last ball, and I get an extra ball for hitting the thing in the top left, but it didn't register properly. It was shown in the information on the right, but the game still ended when I lost the ball I was on.
Don't all pinball machines behave like that??
That's when you try to tip it over and fail miserably!!! ;)
WARNING - DON'T TRY THIS WITH YOUR LAPTOP!!!
The problem with pinball is that there seem to be no good pinball games out there for the Arcade software -- there are a few but they all suck. I added a second pinball game now, which seems to be the best of the half dozen or so that I found, hopefully this is more to your liking. If not, not much we can do until someone finds a decent pinball game for us...
To make the line-up an even dozen I also added one of my personal favourite Flash games ever, Bubble Shooter (if for no other reason than that it saves me from having to have an extra tab open all the time ;))
For my own references, games suggested elsewhere:
Frogger
Missile Command
Pong
Centipede
Defender
Galaxian
Qix
eastsidebagel

Well, the new Bubble Shooter game is really enjoyable so far, so thank you for including it, Locutus. :)

I want Jewels. Less reflexes, more clicking.
A tower defence game would be good, but I don't know if any are compatible with the arcade system.

Sorry. I don't get out of the OT much. :cute:
I see you listed my suggestions.
Question - Can/will you remove games? Simon and Hexx screw up the rankings.

I recommend the Frogger variant at neave.
Edit: Wait, why should Simon be removed?

Ditto
Im having a blast at it:w00t:
Edit: Wait, why should Simon be removed?
Because it is too easy to cheat on. I don't think anyone has cheated yet, but it is the only game there which anyone can cheat on.

The scores can't be trusted (too easy to cheat).
I put Hexx on the remove list as 58 is the top score and all that separates top from bottom will be a few seconds.

true
Not even a few seconds. I'm not sure that faster than 25 is possible. (The record is 26)
Frogger would be great. The pinball and hexx could easily be removed.

I've not played frogger in decades!
New games?
Please? :eager:
I'm done schooling everyone on the games we currently have. :DD
Oh, and once again... Please remove simon and hex.
Thanks.
I don't suppose you've got a flash version of Civ handy? :p:
I know nothing of this flash stuff. I'm an end user of the product.
*bump*
The Simon cheatfest begins this weekend...

Agreed, Simon is very cheater friendly and Hex is extremely played out.
As I posted in the OT forum..
My concerns with these games stem from the fact we have a "Leader Board". For this feature to have any meaning the games in the arcade must be a) Cheat proof and b) Have no upper limit on score.
It's time to strap Simon and Hexx to a dolly and wheel those machines out. Use the arcade space for different games and restore the integrity of the Leader Board.
I support Wezil in this endeavour to get Simon and Hex removed.
I would also add the first pinball game we had to that list, as it is just so bad.
It is an awful game but I'm prepared to tolerate that one. It does meet both my criteria and therefore doesn't mess with the leader board.
I notice a distinct absence of mods/owners in this thread and discussion. :(
Would it assist the site if I offered myself up as Arcade Manager? My tech skills are minimal but I do know about arcades (and how to count out quarters).

But your a friendly rodent:naughty:
I'm debating removing the We Play Civ bookmark from my browser actually.
The OT was irreparably let go to Spam and it now appears the arcade is about as important to the owners of this site as the OT is.
I hope the On Topic forums are thriving because the rest of the place is failing.

Agreed. All it takes is one post: "we're looking at it", "we will get to it", or even "we intend to leave it as is".

The spam is only in the threads where spam is allowed, which is only a couple of threads....

Glad to hear someone finally realised the problem but you have heard the saying about closing the barn door after the horse has left?
The OT posters are already gone. The damage is done.
Not really, I see a wide variety of posters over in OT.
Would they also be posters with almost 4000 posts in two months?
Nope, no spam there. ;)
Geez people. I have friends and family to ignore me. I don't need this.

I'm guessing that they have a lot of other things to worry about besides the Arcade.
Wezil, I didn't know you were so anti spam. Did you forget about this? (http://www.weplayciv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138)
Hi guys, fixing up the arcade is on the list. :)
I'm beginning to think they're ignoring you on purpose now
I got a response of some sort from Dale. Not quite what I was talking about, but something at least.
It appears the forum discussion is at Poly. :shame:

I responded in the thread you linked.
Go make your argument. I can use a good laugh.
All I'm saying is that if you look at this thread, you're the one making double posts. ;)
I keep saying the same thing repeatedly in this thread because (until Dale's recent post) there has been NO RESPONSE from those the thread and questions were directed to.
It was being bumped. (Put that on your "Not Spam" list Grasshopper.)
A new reason to get rid of Hexxagon:
It appears to be either bugged or hacked (most likely the former). In the list of recent highscores, Unorthodox is listed as having the highscore and that is reflected in the highscore champions list.
But his highscore in the Hexxagon table is only 41 seconds, compared to Russia4Life's score of 26 seconds.
I just got the 3rd best time in Hexxagon. :3rd:

Maybe it just shows the latest player to get 58 as the one with the high score?

We're whistling in the graveyard PiMan. No one is listening. :(
I've been deterred from the OT (for the most part) and I have not played in the arcade for about a week now. My days at this site are numbered.
It's too bad the moderators are so hands off and unwilling to address issues that are raised. It doesn't bode well for the long term future of the site when posters that came here with genuine good intentions are leaving because they are tired of being ignored.

No, it (at least previously) shows the one with the best time. Weird things happen when the times and scores are the same though.

I meant maybe that is what it is doing now.
Another day. Another bump.
I'll bug Locutus specifically about this, he should see if the games should be removed for being "cheatable".
I am a retired Civ player so the On Topic Forums are of no interest to me. In all honesty my hope for this site was that the Off Topic would be a success (and not plagued by tech issues as the other place is). I like a place to hang out. Frankly, the OT has failed and is not what I was looking for but I think the Arcade is a nice touch. Don't let it fail as well.
I was serious with my offer of help with the arcade. The rest of you guys are no doubt busy with other sections of the site I have yet to go to. I confess I have few tech skills but I really do understand arcades so surely there is something I can do to help in this regard.
ie - Is there a money issue with the games you have? Did you pay to acquire rights of any kind (hence a reluctance to remove)? Or are your games "free" from other sources?
I appreciate that offer and I like the idea. I'll let Loc decide on this one just because the arcade on this site is something he started. The games we have there are free, there are enough things on the site costing money as it is.
As for the offtopic... it might not be what you were looking for but I don't consider it a failure. But I probably have a different idea of what the offtopic and its purpose should be than a lot of people from Apolyton. But that's a different story.
About removing those games from the arcade, what would you think about just making them exempt from rankings instead?

I like that idea Solver:b:

Perhaps that could be a compromise.
I would still take them out, particularly if there is no cost issue with removing them and let the Leader Board speak for the whole arcade and not just the preferred games. The games like Simon and Hexx really are just clutter in an arcade anyway. As board games or home entertainment they are fine but they aren't arcade material. You should fill your arcade with good games not just any games. I've browsed websites with "arcade" games before and nothing turns me off faster than trying a couple games at random and finding they both suck.
The classic theme started by the inclusion of Space Invaders, Asteroids, Pac man, Tetris, etc. should be continued. Centipede is noticeably absent and should be added asap as should one of the Donkey Kong series (as much as I personally dislike them). Some other posters have mentioned some good classics of which, Frogger comes to mind...
The reason merely removal from rankings is being suggested is that people do actually play those games. Making them non-ranked makes sense if they're easily cheated but it would also be nice to let the people playing them continue to do so.
I will presume your are using the stats found on the "Your Rankings" page?
Simon isn't being played if that is the case (2nd lowest).
I will confess the Hexx number has me puzzled. I'm thinking we had a few players incessantly trying for the Fastest Mouse Click prize. :dunno:
edit - Nope. I figured it out. An abandoned game (not finished) still counts. There is your answer to the Hexx number.
I would strongly suspect that abandoned games count for all games. According to those numbers anyway, yeah, Simon isn't doing very well (but neither is Space Invaders or Pacman, the ultimate classics - huh?) but obviously Hexx is popular, abandoned games or not. So the ranking-exempt solution does sound attractive to me.
But I think you miss the point.
The abandoned Hexx games reflect the poor nature of the game. If we could measure it I assure you the total % of games played that are abandoned would be very high on this one. It's all about finding the pattern then mastering the rapid mouse clicks. Abandoning happens when one of those two go wrong. Heck, I "played" Hexx a bunch of times by that measure.
I'm surprised by the low Space Invaders number quite frankly. I thought it would be higher. Perhaps my awesomeness has scared everyone off? ;)
PacMan was a later addition so it hasn't been around as long.
Keep in mind, my comments here aren't based upon personal preferences. If they were I'd be screaming to have Snake taken out (I believe this is my worst ranked game).

After my Space Invaders AAR, nobody wants to take on the Strategery.
Space Invaders is boring. Nothing changes. That could be why no one plays it.
The situation is the same with breakout. Frankly, I'm surprised why anyone would play the games more than a few times.
-
Snake is by far the most entertaining game in the arcade. :) It is fast, challenging, and rewarding.

It is a simple game (hence why it was the 1st real arcade video game - I don't count pong). It is significant and nostalgic for many.

Arkanoid would have been a much better choice for this type of game. I wasn't consulted. ;)

It certainly is popular.

Well, I understand how it is nostalgic for many people, and I remember playing the game in an arcade... but recall that the older versions of the game were more entertaining. ... But of course, Space Invaders has nothing on Galaga. :)
Galaga/Galaxians is needed for sure.
I'm not sure what you found so much different about the original Space Invaders compared to the version we have? The original had different colours but that's about it as far as I remember. :dunno:
Perhaps I never did too well on the original then. I seem to recall some variation in the levels- at least the blocks rebuilt.
There is also a pattern to get 300pts from the top ship each time but I forget it now. :(

Honestly, I do agree with removing leaderboards for Hexxagon and Simon. The others can't be gamed like those two.
