Is it okay to post about RONTAP as well? (Rise of Nations & Thrones and Patriots, real-time strategy game from Brian Reynolds and Big Huge Games.)
I do a fair bit of modding for this game, which may be a little bittersweet now that the design house is facing bankruptcy.

Excellent! I'm such a latecomer to RONTAP modding, but it is a great game engine and I'm eager to see what I'll end up with when I tickle the Muse. Glad to know I can host stuff here. :b:

This is the first I had heard of layoffs at BHG, I know that their Rise of Legends title was a Big Huge flop but it seems that their publisher has lost faith in their abilities and what ever they were in the process of making (some kind of RPG it seems) it might never see the light of day. I suspect Firaxis will pick up some of the laid off people as they did when another nearby studio BreakAway downsized massively at the start of the market downturn.
I've heard of Rise of Nations but have never played it.

Nor I. I was absolutely gutted when Bioware drifted off into the ether, and now BHG is in trouble too? :(
They should make a Wii game just to keep the cashflows sufficient for developing great PC strategy games. ;)

I have uploaded a mod for RONTAP (Rise of Nations, plus Thrones and Patriots add-on). Assuming it makes it through the moderation process, it will present players with a simple mod changing a few UUs (unique units) and also have a document about how we made the mod.
That way, maybe more players will see how to tweak the game and give it a shot themselves.
Oerdin - you should give the game a try. I normally don't like RTSes, but this one really appealed to me and I haven't stopped playing it since 2005.
I played RoN for a while (once I solved the crashes caused by my video card and/or CPU overheating) but I never got into it despite the great concept and brilliant graphics. It was too much clicking on **** for me and I tend to get tendonitis in my fingers from weightlifting.

In its defense, it does have the excellent benefit of speed on its side. Once I started my law school studies, I just didn't have time for lengthy "one more turn addiction" games :(
RONTAP was a good bridge between strategy and tactics. If you're still up for a game, I'm definitely open for multiplaying.

Bioware? They're still going...

I've heard through the Grapevine that BHG is probably going to change publishers but will remain in business.

That's great news, Impaler! Great news!
I look forward to hearing the official confirmation that they're still with us... and putting out good games!
Great news - I really hope it comes off, we dont have enough 'quality' game devs imho, and they were one of them.

Yup. Reynolds tended not so much to come up with the innovation, but his main strength seemed more to be taking an already-existing game design and then pushing it to its full developmental potential.
He was mostly behind Civ2, which Sid Meier did the innovation for. Likewise, SMAC (which he designed almost entirely) was a further evolution of the Civ concept.
RONTAP was by no means the first game to blend real time strategy with the entire scope of history. But it was a very skillful improvement on the genre.
