Actually the short version is that 'poly is and has been going though changes, and this was a good jumping off point, for whatever individual reason.

As I understand it, the three founders intended to start this site. Their kick-off date was accelerated by the problems at 'poly.

So the three founders had intended to leave, maybe not so soon.
